In the previous lesson, you learned
different method of factoring:

✓ Common Monomial Factor

✓ Factoring by grouping
✓ Factoring general trinomials
Objectives:
The learners should be able to:
● factor completely perfect square trinomials;
and
● solve word problems involving factors of
polynomials
Factoring a Perfect Square Trinomial
How to recognize a perfect square trinomial ?
Twice the product
of the square roots
of the first and last
First term is terms Last term is
perfect perfect square
square

a2 + 2ab + b2

(a) x (b) x (2) = 2ab

Factoring a Perfect Square Trinomial
How to recognize a perfect square trinomial ?

Example :
x + 10x + 25
2

x x 5 x 2 = 10x

y + 8y + 16
2

y x 4 x 2 = 8y
x + 5x + 4
2

x x 2 x 2 = 4x
Steps in Factoring a Perfect Square Trinomial

Step 1: Find the square root of the first term.

Step 2: Find the square root of the last term.

Step 3: Combine the answers in step 1 and 2.

Step 4: The sign between the answers in step 3 are the

same as the sign of the middle term of the perfect square
trinomial.

Step 5: Multiply the answer on step 4 to itself.

Example 1: Find the factors of 25x +
2 20xy + 4y .
2

Solution:

Step 1: Find the square root of the first term. Step 3: Combine the answers in step 1 and 2.

√25 x 2 = 5x 5x 2y
Step 4: The sign between the answers in
Step 2: Find the square root of the last term. step 3 are the same as the sign of the middle
term of the perfect
square trinomial.
√4y = 2y 2
5x + 2y
Example 1: Find the factors of 25x +
2 20xy + 4y .
2

Solution:

Step 5: Multiply the answer on step 4 to itself.

5x + 2y
(5x + 2y)(5x + 2y) or (5x + 2y) 2

To check, (5x + 2y)(5x + 2y) = 25x

+ 10xy + 10xy +
2 4y 2

= 25x + 20xy + 4y
2 2
Example 2: Find the factors of 16a +
2 24ab + 9b .
2

Solution:

Step 1: Find the square root of the first term. Step 3: Combine the answers in step 1 and 2.

√16a = 4a 2 4a 3b
Step 4: The sign between the answers in
Step 2: Find the square root of the last term. step 3 are the same as the sign of the middle
term of the perfect
square trinomial.
√9b = 3b 2
4a + 3b
Example 2: Find the factors of 16a +
2 24ab + 9b .
2

Solution:

Step 5: Multiply the answer on step 4 to itself.

4a + 3b
(4a + 3b)(4a + 3b) or (4a + 3b) 2
Example 3: Find the factors of 49m n +
4 2 70m np
2 3 +
25p6.
Solution:

Step 1: Find the square root of the first term. Step 3: Combine the answers in step 1 and 2.

√ 49m n
4 2 =7 mn
2 7 mn
2 5 p 3

Step 4: The sign between the answers in

Step 2: Find the square root of the last term. step 3 are the same as the sign of the middle
term of the perfect
square trinomial.
√ 25p 6 =5 p 3
7 mn
2 + 5 p 3
Example 3: Find the factors of 49m n +
4 2 70m np
2 3 +
25p6.
Solution:

Step 5: Multiply the answer on step 4 to itself.

7 mn
2 +5 p 3

(7 m n
2 + 5 )(7
p 3 m n
2 + 5 ) or (7
p 3 m n
2 +5 )p 3 2
Example 4: Find the factors of 36p -
4 84p q
2 + 49q .
2

Solution:

Step 1: Find the square root of the first term. Step 3: Combine the answers in step 1 and 2.

√ 36p 4 =6 p 2 6 p 2 7q
Step 4: The sign between the answers in
Step 2: Find the square root of the last term. step 3 are the same as the sign of the middle
term of the perfect
square trinomial.
√ 49q 2 = 7q
6 p 2 - 7q
Example 4: Find the factors of 36p -
4 84p q
2 + 49q .
2

Solution:

Step 5: Multiply the answer on step 4 to itself.

6 p 2 - 7q

(6 p 2 - 7q)(6 p 2 - 7q) or (6 p 2 - 7q )2
Key Points to Remember
Key Points to Remember
To factor a perfect square trinomial, find
the square roots of the first term and the last
term of the trinomial and combine these square
roots. To check if the factors are correct,
multiply these binomials.
Start Doing

Factor the following perfect square trinomials.

Express your answer as a square of a binomial.
1.4x 2 + 4xy + y 2 =
2.25a 2 + 20ac + 4c 2 =
3.16a2 + 48a 2 + 36 =
4. 9d 6 + 24d e
3 2 + 16e4 =
5.49s +
2 42ds + 9d 2 =
