Math 9-Q1-L1.3-Sum and Product of The Roots of A Quadratic Equation

The document discusses how to find the sum and product of the roots of a quadratic equation without directly solving for the roots. It provides the formulas to calculate the sum and product of the roots directly from the coefficients of the quadratic equation. It also discusses how to write the quadratic equation if given the two roots.

Review of Previous Lesson
How can the sum and product of the roots
of the quadratic equation ax + bx + c = 0 be
2
obtained without solving the equation?
How can you obtain the quadratic equation
if the two roots are known?
●Denote the roots of a quadratic equation
ax + bx + c = 0, where a ≠ 0, as S1 and S2.
2

●By quadratic formula the two roots are;

and
●The sum of the roots is;

S1 + S2 +
=

The sum of two roots of a quadratic

S1 + S2 = equation.
●The product of the roots is;

S1S2 = x

S1S2 = The product of two roots of a

quadratic equation.
❏ If S1 and S2 are the roots of the
quadratic equation ax + bx + c = 0,
2

a ≠ 0, then

S1 + S2 and S1S2 =
=
Example 1: Find the sum and product of the
roots of the equation 2x + 5x + 7 = 0.
2

Solution:
a = 2, b = 5, c = 7 Identify the values of a, b, and c.

𝟓
S1 + S2 = or -
𝟐

S1S2 =
❏ The quadratic equation can be
written as,

x 2 - (sum of roots)x + (product of roots) = 0

Example 2: What is the quadratic equation
whose roots are 2 and -5?
Solution: S1 = 2, S2 = -5

S1 + S2 = 2 + (-5) = -3 S1S2 = 2(-5) = -10

Solution:
S1 + S2 = 2 + (-5) = -3 S1S2 = 2(-5) = -10

Therefore, the equation is

x2 - (sum of roots)x + (product of roots) = 0

x2 - (-3)x + (-10) = 0
x2 + 3x - 10 = 0
Key Takeaways
❏ If S1 and S2 are the roots of the
quadratic equation ax + bx + c = 0,
2

a ≠ 0, then

S1 + S2 and S1S2 =
=
❏ The quadratic equation can be
written as,

x 2 - (sum of roots)x + (product of roots) = 0
