a. Sampling is a process of selecting a number of individuals/objects for a study


such a way that the individuals/objects represent the sample from a target
population

b. Sampling techniques have two type are probability sampling (random) which
is simple random, systematic, stratified, cluster & multistage. Next,
non-probability sampling (not random) is convenience, quota, judgemental
and snowball.

c. Sampling Frame is a list of all members/objects in a population. It is prepared


so that samples can be selected randomly from a population.

2) What are the techniques of probability sampling ?

a. Simple random sampling


b. Systematic sampling
c. Stratified sampling
d. Cluster sampling
e. Multistage sampling

3) State the differences between cluster and stratified sampling by discussing


the sample selection methods for each technique. Give one example for each
type of sampling.

Meaning :

Stratified sampling is one, in which the population is divided into


homogeneous segments, and then the sample is randomly taken from the
segments. Cluster sampling refers to a sampling method wherein the
members of the population are selected at random, from naturally occurring
groups called 'cluster'.

Sample :

Randomly selected individuals are taken from all the strata. All the individuals
are taken from randomly selected clusters.

Objective :
For the stratified to increase precision and representation while cluster to
reduce cost and improve efficiency.

Selection of population elements:

For stratified is Individually but for the cluster is collectively

Homogeneity - Stratified, Within group. Cluster, Between groups

Heterogeneity - Stratified, Between groups. Cluster, Within group

Bifurcation - Stratified, Imposed by the researcher. Cluster, Naturally occurring


groups

4) State whether each of the following is TRUE or FALSE:

a) Simple random sampling is based on probability concept. TRUE

b) One of the disadvantages of systematic sampling is that the technique


is not completely random. FALSE

c) Quota sampling requires sampling frame. FALSE

d) The academic staff of Faculty of Entrepreneurship and Business is


divided into groups according to their academics ranks such as lecturer,
senior lecturer, associate professor and professor. Several members are
selected from each group to make a sample. This sampling method is called
cluster sampling. FALSE

7) Identify the types of sampling techniques used in each of the following


situations:

a) A survey on business activities is to be conducted in the state of Kelantan.


The population is divided into rural and urban areas. About five per cent of the rural
and urban population are to be selected randomly.

: Stratified random sampling


b) A sample of workers from clothing department is obtained by selecting every
25th worker from the list given by the department’s manager.

: Systematic random sampling

c) Random numbers generated by a computer for the selection of serial


numbers of television for testing.
