CHAPTER 3 Draft

The document discusses the framework and methodology for a study on work-related stress and well-being. It outlines the research philosophy, design, instruments used, data collection process, and planned data analysis. The study will use a quantitative correlation and mediation analysis approach, collecting data through online surveys distributed to faculty members using convenience and snowball sampling.

CHAPTER 3

FRAMEWORK AND METHODOLOGY

Philosophy of Science

Saunders et. al. (2016), which is the reference used in this section, define research philosophy as
a system of beliefs and assumptions about the development of knowledge. Since this study aims to
contribute to the researches on work-related stress and well-being, the research’s assumptions will be
made explicit as these would affect the methodological approach to be employed in this study.

Still according to Saunders et. al., the following are the research philosophy assumptions:
Ontology, Epistemology, and Axiology. “Ontology refers to the assumptions about the nature of reality.
Epistemology concerns what constitutes acceptable, valid, and legitimate knowledge, and how we can
communicate knowledge to others. Axiology refers to the role of values and ethics within the research
process.” (ibid, pp. 127-128). All these assumptions have relevance on the methodological choices made
for this research.

The same authors have identified four major philosophies, namely: positivism, interpretivism,
realism, realism, and pragmatism. This study will adapt a positivist philosophy as it “entails working with
an observable social reality to produce law-like generalizations. It promises unambiguous and accurate
knowledge.” (ibid, pp. 135).

Conceptual Framework

Research Design

The research shall be a quantitative study. It will employ a correlation and mediation analysis.

The Research Instrument and Implementation

The researcher will adapt the following surveys using Google Forms:

 The Occupational Stress Index (OSI): constructed and standardized by Dr. A. K. Srivastava and
Dr. A. P. Singh (1984) consists of 46 items, each to be rated on a five-point scale.
 PGI General Well-Being Measure: by S. K. Verma and Amita Verma (1989) consists of 20 items
which indicates the overall well-being of the participant. The scores are counted by the number of
ticks against a given item.

Data Collection

The Google Form is going to be administered to tertiary level faculty members of Far Eastern
University-Manila using a combination of convenience, purposive, and snowball sampling. The
researcher will send the link, with the necessary cover letter, to the group chat of his home department
and to the official email addresses of the different deans and department chairs of the university. If some
would not reply, the researcher plans to personally drop by the nearby faculty rooms (like the College of
Nursing) to ask present faculty members to fill out the Google Form which can be sent using the
university’s MS Teams facility for easier spread of the form.

After the actual implementation, the research obtained 35 respondents who voluntarily answered
a Google Sheet survey. Convenience sampling was used due to time constraints and difficulty of
obtaining respondents due to different schedules and faculty workload. Aside from the convenience of
sending an invitation to the group chat of the researcher’s home department, the researcher likewise
emailed the academic managers of the different institutes of FEU to participate in and to request that the
survey be cascaded to the faculty members. Only 3 departments replied and most of their faculty
members were not able to answer the survey. Additionally, the researcher made use of the MS Teams and
internal email of FEU so that there’s no need for the respondents to verify the identity of the researcher.
Because of the slow increase in the number of respondents answering the survey, the researcher was
prompted to go personally to some of the faculty rooms. However, the researcher was only able to
personally meet a few faculty members because some had classes or were not present at the time the
researcher dropped by the faculty rooms.

Data Analysis

After collecting the data, the researchers will proceed to conducting the statistical analysis of these
gathered data. The researchers will measure the mean and percentage distribution of the groups under
demographic profile in terms of their __. To support the objectives of the
