Case Study 1 – XYZ Laboratory Inc.

Introduction
XYZ Laboratory Inc. (XYZ Labs) is a network of Laboratory clinics stationed across North and
South Texas. Each clinic provides high quality pathology services with its referring physicians and
patients. It has had a long history of success since its inception in 1985.

Current Scenario
Over the years, XYZ Labs has strived to continuously improve its expertise and infrastructure to
ensure the quality of their service and the overall customer experience. Presently, the company has a
web portal (iLABS) and 1-800 call center that allows partner physicians and patients to view their
pathology test results. iLABS allows partner physicians and patients to view and print pdf versions
of the completed test results.
The current infrastructure is convenient because it is available 24/7 and is not location dependent.
But this current service also requires a physician or patient to actively login to iLABS site. In the
recent years, many of the partner physicians have their own patient portal, which allow patients to
keep a profile of their health history and visits with their physician’s office. Partner physicians have
expressed their desire to link their lab results with their patient web portal, thus, giving patients a
one stop shop experience and minimize the complication of having to get access to their lab results.
In addition, competitors are also introducing this new service to their partner physicians and
patients.

Desired Outcome
XYZ Labs’ management knows the importance to address this business need. They have asked a
team of internal analysts from the PMO to address this issue with consideration to the following:
➢ Cost consciousness (Justify the investment and consider the ROI)
➢ Taking advantage of existing capabilities
➢ Concern for efficiency
➢ Short turnaround/delivery time

Jane Green is a Business Analyst from the PMO tasked to address the current need. She needs to
evaluate XYZ Labs business need and the solution scope. She needs to determine the organization’s
existing capabilities and what expertise and resources can be leveraged. And consider the possibility
of engaging a third party vendor to implement the solution. Given the urgency mandated by
management, Jane needs to also plan or determine the activities that need to take place if this
proposed development project will proceed.
