Video Project Assignment Instructions
Video Project Assignment Instructions
Objectives:
• To reflect on the relationship between the law and the built city in Hong Kong.
• To develop skills in video production and storyboarding.
• To practice teamwork and collaboration.
Your group is tasked with producing an approximately 7–8 minute video that explores the
influence of the law on one of the physical features of Hong Kong’s built environment.
To complete this part of the assignment, you will need to follow these steps:
1. Choose a physical feature of Hong Kong’s built environment to focus on. This could
be a building, a public space, a transportation hub, or anything else that you feel
represents the city's built environment.
2. Think about what laws govern or affect this physical feature and how they have
influenced its design, construction, or how it is used. You might like to consider
factors such as zoning regulations, building codes, land use restrictions, and public
safety requirements. Also consider how the law might be experienced by (and might
shape the movement and lived experience of) those who move through the physical
feature, such as residents, visitors, or commuters. Think about how the laws (or
strong social norms) governing the feature impact the daily experiences of these
individuals.
3. Create a storyboard that outlines the structure and content of your video. Your
storyboard should include a clear narrative that presents your research findings in an
engaging and thought-provoking way. You should also include sketches or
illustrations of the scenes and shots you plan to use in your video.
4. Submit your storyboard, along with a brief written report (approx. 1 page) that
summarizes your ideas and explains what your video seeks to demonstrate about the
built environment in Hong Kong.

The grade for this part of the assignment will be based on the following criteria:
• Plan and storyboard: Your storyboard should be well-organized, visually clear, and
clearly convey the narrative structure of your video.
• Research and reflection: Your research and reflection should be thorough, well-
organized, and effectively communicate the influence that the law might have had on
the physical feature of Hong Kong’s built environment that you have chosen to
focus on, as well as how the law might be experienced by those who move through
the feature.
• Teamwork and collaboration: You should work effectively with your team members
to plan, research, and produce your storyboard. You should also be prepared to
share your findings and give constructive feedback to other members of the group.

Using the feedback from the first part of the assignment, you will refine your video and
produce a final version that demonstrates your understanding of the relationship between
the law and Hong Kong's built environment.
To complete this part of the assignment, you will need to follow these steps:
1. Review the feedback you received on your storyboard and make any necessary
revisions to your plan and research.
2. Produce your video, following the revised storyboard as closely as possible. You
should use a variety of visual and audio elements, such as images, video footage,
interviews, voice-over, and music, to create a dynamic and compelling video.
The grade for this part of the assignment will be based on the following criteria:
• Video quality: Your video should be visually appealing, well-edited, and effectively
communicate your findings. The audio should be clear and easily understood.
• Content: Your video should accurately reflect your research findings and effectively
convey the relationship between the law and the physical feature of Hong Kong's
built environment that you have chosen to focus on, as well as how the law might be
experienced by those who move through the feature.
• Teamwork and collaboration: You should work effectively with your team members
to produce the final video, using the feedback received from the first part of the
assignment to refine your work. You should also be prepared to give and receive
constructive feedback from other members of the group.

For this video, you may choose to focus mostly on reflection, and consider mainly how your
body and self is affected by laws and rules as you move through the city space. Or you may
choose to undertake broader research into the laws that govern building and planning in
Hong Kong. Here are some places to start when considering construction and planning laws.

Academic Honesty
This course seeks to help you use published research to support your own claims and
arguments on a topic. Any instance of plagiarism or any other form of academic dishonesty
(like unauthorized collaboration) may result in a failing grade or a more severe penalty.
Plagiarism is the use of other people’s ideas without acknowledging the source. Remember
that changing words around does not absolve you from acknowledging the source. Despite
what you may have heard elsewhere, you should avoid paraphrasing – this course is all about
the proper use of direct quotations! Do your source the credit of using his/her own words.
In tutorials, we will practice ways to skillfully blend quotations into your own sentences –
use these skills in your work! Always use quotation marks. Always include the page number
(if there is one) in any citation.

The university has high expectations for ethical conduct among students. Students must
always pursue academic honesty in their studies, as this is a condition for authentic learning
and creative intellectual contributions. Committing the following (including but not limited
to) dishonest behaviour is unacceptable in any circumstances:
• Plagiarism (i.e. use of other people’s work without proper acknowledgement);
• Submitting an assignment that is not the student’s own work, including the use of
prior students’ work
• Forgery of any document or certificate
Please be reminded that disciplinary actions in connection with the violation of academic
honesty may result in serious consequences such failing the assignment or the course,
suspension of study, withdrawal of academic awards, and, potentially, discontinuation of
studies at the University. Plagiarism may be handled by the individual teacher or reported to
the University Disciplinary Committee.
Late Submission
If your group is in need of an extension for medical or other extenuating circumstances,
please be sure to contact your tutor before the deadline and provide any supporting
documentation.
In the absence of an agreed extension, late assignments may be marked down by one grade
category (e.g. A à A-) for each day that it is late.
