Lab # 4

Date: November 13, 2023

Problem Statement: Plan and design an experiment to investigate the effects of carbon dioxide
concentration on the rate of photosynthesis.

Hypothesis: When the concentration of carbon dioxide increases, the rate of photosynthesis also
increases until the rate becomes constant.

Aim: To determine the effect of carbon dioxide concentration on the rate of photosynthesis.

Apparatus and materials: Elodea/Hydrilla, different concentration of sodium hydrogen

carbonate, distilled water, stopwatch, thermometer, stirring rod, beaker, boiling tube, clip, light
source, and filter funnel.

Method:

1. Fill a boiling tube with 150 ml of 1% sodium hydrogen carbonate solution.

2. Fix a paper clip to a sprig of the Elodea plant.

3. Submerge the aquatic plant into a boiling tube containing 1 % sodium hydrogen

carbonate solution.

4. Put the boiling tube into a water bath at room temperature (20-30°C).

5. Place the boiling tube at distance 50 cm from a lighted bulb.

6. Put the boiling tube aside for 5 minutes (for the aquatic plant to adjust)

7. Start the stopwatch and count the number of bubbles released in 20 minutes.

8. Record the results in a tabular form

9. Repeat steps 1-8 using 2%, 3% and 4% of sodium hydrogen carbonate solutions.

10. Calculate the rate of photosynthesis (Rate of photosynthesis = number of bubbles/time)

Variables:

Manipulated: Concentration of carbon dioxide

Controlled: Light intensity, temperature, size of the plant.

Responding: Rate of photosynthesis (number of bubbles released)

Expected Results:

TITLE:

Concentration of NaHCO₃ Number of bubbles released Rate of photosynthesis

solution (%) in 20 minutes

It is expected that when the concentration of carbon dioxide increases, the rate of photosynthesis
also increases until the rate becomes constant therefore the hypothesis is valid.

Precautions:

1.) Ensure a thermometer is used to keep the water temperature constant,

2.) Ensure to count the bubble after the rate becomes constant.
3.) Ensure to use safe and appropriate lighting to avoid any heat-related issues.

Sources of error:

1.) Parallax Error

2.) Incorrect thermometer reading
