Characteristics Capabilities and Limitation of Computers

A computer is characterized by its speed, accuracy, versatility, large storage capacity, ability to work diligently without tiring, and ability to work automatically. It has capabilities like security, efficient computing, networking, and ease of handling large amounts of data. However, it is dependent on users, cannot correct errors itself, cannot interact with users, needs regular power supply, and lacks reasoning abilities.

CHARACTERISTICS, CAPABILITIES AND LIMITATION OF A COMPUTER

CHARACTERISTICS OF COMPUTER:

Speed : A computer is a very fast device. It can carry out instructions at a

very high speed. It can perform in a few seconds the amount of work that
a human being can do in an entire year-if he work day and night and is
nothing else. Some calculations that would have take hours and days to
complete otherwise, can be completed in a few seconds using computers.
The speed of the computer is calculated in MHZ. that is one million
instructions per second. For example, calculation of salary slips of
thousands of employees.

Accuracy : accuracy of a computer is consistently very high and the

degree of accuracy of a particular computer depends on the instructions
and the type of processor. But for a particular computer, each and every
calculation is performed. For example, the computeraccurately gives the
result of division of two numbers up to 10 decimal points.

Versatility: versatility is one of the most wonderful things

about computer. It can perform different types of tasks with the same
case. For example, at one movement you are using the computer for
preparing a letter document and in next movement you may play music or
print a document.

Storage capacity: large amount of data information can be saved

in computer and also retrieved whenever required. Second storage
devices (hard disk) can be stored large amount of data. A computer can
store and recall any amount of information because of its secondary
storage (a type of detachable memory) capability. Every piece
of information can be retained as long as desired by the user, and can be
recalled, as and when required.

Diligence : when used for a longer period of time, the computer does not
get tired. It can perform for a long and computer calculation with the
same speed. Unlike human being, a computer is free form monotony,
tiredness and lack of concentration. it can continuously work for hours,
without creating any error and without grumbling.

Automatic : A machine is said to be automatic, if it works by itself

without human intervention Computers are automatic machines because
once started on a job, they carry on until the job is finished, normally
without any human assistance.

No IQ : It possesses no intelligence of its own. It has to be told what to do

and in what sequence. Hence, only the user can determine what tasks
a computer will perform. Acomputer cannot take its own decision in this
regard.

Absence of Feelings : Computer are devoid of emotions. They have no

feelings and no instincts because they are machines
However, computers cannot make such judgments on their own. Their
judgment is based on the instructions given to them in the form
ofprograms that are written by us.

CAPABILITIES OF COMPUTER

Security: Users cannot see other user's files unlike by the use of password
and other security means.

Efficient and wide Range of computing: Computer can do calculations

from simple arithmetic calculations to comparisons to high level scientific
and engineering calculations. Even the accuracy, reliability and
efficiency are multiplied in comparison to humans.

Networking: Provides sharing of resources like devices, files, save

overheads like money and time. This ranges from connectivity
of computers from few kilometers to coverage of even entire world.
internetworking provides various other advantages like that of
communication, banking, and commerce via the network only.

Ease of handling of Data: A computer allows a person to

manipulate data easily and quickly, create text documents, edit them,
print them, manipulate images and print them. Millions and trillions bytes
of data can be handled easily by the use of various utility packages like
excel, word, etc. Not only this, the data can also be analyzed and
manipulated by using the computer in even minutes of time.

Durability of Data: The files stored on a standalone system can be kept

safely for longer duration by keeping the backup of data on storage
devices. And in case of networked systems a file server easily to back up
all the data.

Magnificent Educational tool: Good software can also help learners

develop their understanding of cause and effect, higher order problem-
solving, procedural thinking, and expression. Computers help to control
experience, to set pace, and to select the level of challenge with which
learners feel comfortable.

LIMITATIONS OF COMPUTER
Dependent on User: The computer is dependent on the user who gives
the instructions, cannot work itself.

Cannot correct the Errors: Computer cannot correct the errors by itself.

Cannot Interact with the User: The computer is a machine and cannot
interact with the user, user has to give the instructions to the machine
and then it works.

Power supply: Regular power supply is major requirement for computers.

Productivity: It has been observed that computers have some times
taken much longer time in performing the task as compare to
the manual work.

Reasoning: Computers have several advantages but

still computers cannot think. Computerscannot distinguish among
different types of data and they have no capability for ethical valuations
so they may not be useful when one want to do the subjective evaluation.
