Simple Past: Affirmative form of regular verbs

You add “-ed” to regular verbs in the affirmative form to talk about the past. This is the
same for all the persons.

Simple Past: Negative form of regular verbs


(Simple Past: Forma negativa de los verbos regulares)
To make negative sentences in the Simple Past, we use “did not” with all the personal
pronouns and the verb in the infinitive. We can contract this negative form and say
“didn’t”.
(Para hacer oraciones negativas en el Simple Past, usamos “did not” con todos los
pronombres personales y el verbo en infinitivo. Podemos contraer la forma negativa y
decir “didn’t”.)

 I didn’t arrive on time yesterday.


 You didn’t call your mother.
 She didn’t stay in the hotel.
 He didn’t wash the car last night.
 It didn’t like meat one year ago.
 You didn’t enjoy the film yesterday.
 We didn’t finish the project.
 They didn’t play the piano last week.

Simple Past: Interrogative form of regular verbs


(Simple Past: Forma interrogativa de los verbos regulares)

Yes/No questions
(Preguntas cuya respuesta es “Sí” o “No”)
To make these questions in the Simple Past, we use:
Did + subject + infinitive + complement ?
(Para hacer estas preguntas en el pasado, usamos:
Did + sujeto + infinitivo + complemento?)
 A: Did you like this job?
B: Yes, I did.
 A: Did she cook well?
B: No, she didn’t.
 A: Did he dance in the club?
B: Yes, he did.
 A: Did it play with the ball?
B: No, it didn’t.
 A: Did you stay at home?
B: Yes, we did.
 A: Did they wash the car?
B: No, they didn´t.

Wh- questions
(Preguntas con palabras interrogativas)
To make these questions in the Simple Past, we use:
Wh- word + did + subject + infinitive + complement?
(Para hacer estas preguntas en el pasado, usamos:
Palabra interrogativa + did + sujeto + infinitivo + complemento?)

 A: What did you do there?


B: I called customers and talked with them most of the time.
 A: Where did he study English?
B: He studied in a private school of English.
 A: Who did they live with last year?
B: They lived with their parents.
 A: Why did you call him?
B: Because I wanted to see him.

An irregular verb in the Simple Past changes its form in affirmative sentences.

 Our boss gave us a new project.
 We spent most of the time working on it.

Simple Past: Negative form of irregular verbs

To make negative sentences with irregular verbs in the Simple Past, we use “did not”
and the verb in the infinitive. We can contract this negative form and say “didn’t”.
(Para hacer oraciones negativas con verbos irregulares en el Simple Past, usamos “did
not” y el verbo en infinitivo. Podemos contraer la forma negativa y decir “didn’t”.)
 I didn’t have enough money to stay longer.
 She didn’t eat a sandwich for lunch.
 He didn’t read a book last year.
 It didn’t swim in the lake two hours ago.
 You didn’t get home early yesterday.
 We didn’t know exactly how to complete it.
 They didn’t write the answers in their notebooks.

Habits in the past: “Used to”


(Hábitos en el pasado: “Solía”)
We use “used to” to refer to regular habits in the past which are no longer true in the
present. It can refer to repeated actions, to a state or a situation.
(Usamos “used to” para referirnos a hábitos en el pasado que no ocurren todavía en el
presente. Se puede referir a acciones repetidas, a un estado o a una situación.)

Affirmative form
(Forma afirmativa)

To make affirmative sentences with “used to”, we use:

Subject + used to + infinitive + complement

 I used to visit my grandparents.


 I used to collect stamps and play with my neighbours in the streets.

Negative form

We can also use a “Wh-” word at the beginning of the question.
