B. What are the causes of air, water, and land pollution? Match pictures with expressions from the box.
- factory fume emissions - oil spill - deforestation (=cutting down trees)
- sewage waste - vehicle smoke - throwing waste in the streets.
- fertilizers - plant pesticides - industrial toxic waste

 Air pollution is caused by:

Effects of pollution on Effects of pollution on

people the environment

 WHILE READING
Read the text and check your answers to part B and C.
In the modern world, pollution is a very serious problem because it comes from machines which man
has invented to satisfy his daily needs.

There are four different types of pollution. Firstly, there is air pollution. Factories and vehicles
swallow O2, and their fumes poison the air with (CO2). As a consequence, pollutants in the air make it
hard for people to breathe causing lung and skin diseases. Another effect is the expansion of Ozone hole,
leading to more unfiltered ultra violet rays (UV rays) entering from the sun to earth. These rays can cause
skin rash and cancer.

Secondly, we have water pollution. Many factories dump their toxic waste in many rivers and lakes,
and ships spill oil in oceans and rivers; as a result, drinking water becomes toxic and many aquatic
animals and plants are dying in increasing number.

Thirdly, there is land pollution. This type results from people throwing away so much garbage and not
recycling most of it. Therefore, we have landfills growing in our cities which result in the death of many
animals and plants. In the countryside, the use of fertilizers and pesticide sprays poison soil, water sources
and contaminate the food we eat.

If nothing is done to stop pollution, most of us will die!

After READING
Write a short expository paragraph about the causes and effects of “Noise Pollution”
Noise pollution is ……………………………………………………………………………………

Unit 03: Back to Nature. Sequence02: Reading and writing Date: ……………………………...

1. Read the second paragraph of the text on the previous page and pick out a sentence which is close in
meaning to the following:
a. Drinking water becomes toxic because ships spill oil in oceans and rivers
b. ……………………………………………………………………
2. Read sentences (A-B) and fill in the following tables :
A. Expressing …………………………

Effect (result) Connector Cause

B. Expressing …………………………

Cause Connector Effect (result)

3. Complete the following reminder:

To express cause we use:

Result + cause connector+ cause
Cause connectors: because/as/since+Subject+Verb…….
To express effect(consequence) we use:
Cause + result connector+ result
Result connectors: As a result/As a consequence / Consequently /Thus /Therefore/So+ Subject+Verb.......

Let’s Practise: Match each cause of pollution with its corresponding effect in the table below. Use the linking
words and make the necessary changes in punctuation:

Cause Connectors Effect

a. Factories and
vehicles release gases into the air 1. Global warming is
…; as a result… happening.

…; as a consequence, 2. The atmosphere is full of

pollution.
b. When water is heated, the ..; consequently,
molecules move quickly

begin the text with: There is (water, rice, ….)

When we want to describe this quantity of matter, we use quantifiers “NONE

OF, A LITTLE OF, SOME OF, MOST OF, ALL OF….

2- Countable: when we want to say that a total number of people or

things exist, begin the text with: There are (animals, people ….)
Activity 01: rewrite the paragraph below by replacing each of the underlined expressions with its
corresponding quantifiers.

1- There is a lot of water on earth. However, we cannot use 100% of it because 97% of it is salt-water
stored in oceans. Only 03% of the earth’s water is fresh water.
