Loans: you borrow and must be
paid back with interest
● Direct Subsidized Loans
○ Made based for undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need to help cover
the costs of higher education at college or career school
○ Loans ranges from $5,500-$12,500 a year
○ Does not accurate interest until graduated along with a 6 month grace period
● Direct Unsubsidized Loans
○ Made based not on financial need but for undergraduate, graduate, and professional
students
○ Interest accurates once the loan is taken out
● Parent Plus Loans
○ Are federal loans that parents of dependent undergraduate students can use to help
pay for college or career school (for parents to borrow)

Grants: A form of financial aid that does not need to be
paid back. Grants come from the federal government, state
government, college or career school, or a private/nonprofit
organization
● Federal Pell Grant
○ Awarded only to undergraduate students who display exceptional financial need and do not
have a bachelor’s, graduate, or professional degree.
○ The award amount depends on expected family contribution, cost of attendance, your status
as a full or part-time student
○ Plans to attend school for a full academic year or less
○ The maximum amount you can receive is $7,395 a year (this changes yearly)
● Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG)
○ Awarded only to undergraduate students who display exceptional financial need
○ Administered directly by the financial aid office at each participating school (not all
schools).
○ May be awarded between $100 and $4000 a year, depending on financial need, when you
apply, the amount of other aids, and the availability of funds at your school

● Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants
○ If your parent or guardian died as a result of military service in Iraq or
Afghanistan after the events of 9/11, you may be eligible for an Iraq and
Afghanistan Service Grant
○ Under 24 years old or enrolled in college at least part-time at the time of
your parent’s or guardian’s death
