“PURAN” SINGH

- THE COMPLETE
A CASE STUDY IN HAPPINESS

Punjabi University, Patiala

PURPOSE
After giving his 10th class finals, a
penniless boy of 19, in Lahore, travels
home on foot
In search of food and shelter, he reaches
a nearby gurudwara where he observes
how both animals and humans are taken
care of.
The environment is enveloped in
constant chanting and singing of sacred
hymns - Gurbani.
Experiencing all of this, the boy feels
this is the all-pervasiveness of God, in
action.
Realising that he needs to be a part of
this blissful way of existing, he becomes
a sevadaar there, known as Puran Singh.
COMPASSION
A physically disabled child is abandoned
at the entrance of the gurudwara.
Puran Singh takes care of him, calls him
“Pyaara”(beloved) and carries him on his
back for the next 16 years.
Post-partition, he takes many other
disabled, sick and destitute humans and
animals off the streets and establishes
Pingalwara for them to live in.
Asks people on the streets for
donations; spending none on himself.
Cleans, clothes, feeds and carries the
sick around by himself “My deep love for
the child removed the fear of infection
from my mind.”
SELF - REFLECTION
In his daily life, he would wake up early morning
around 3 am, meditate and then chant or listen to
sacred hymns.
During the day, while serving others, negative
thoughts (such as the futility of his actions in this
grand world) would often bother him, which he
would resolve by reading and listening to Gurbani.
He would spend all of his daytime in service ,
knowing himself to be God’s own - here to serve
God themselves in the form of all the needy.
Often people he would take care of would pass
away and he would both grieve for he saw them as
family while also gaining acceptance through
Gurbani, “Everything is in the hands of God and
one has to bow his head to His will.”
Inspired by Guru’s teachings about oneness , he
reads about and finds inspiration from lives of
Jesus Christ, Prophet Muhammad, Bhagat Dhru,
Shivji, the Sikh Gurus and his own mother.
STUDY
He actively educated himself about the world
through pamphlets, newspapers, and libraries
so he could serve the world better.
Well aware about the current state of affairs -
how kidnapped children are made to beg, girls
are sold to brothels while mentally disabled
women are forced to have children just to
feed themselves.
Abandons leather after finding out about the
cruelty meted out to animals in their
production, adopts wooden sandals and rural
industry.
Additionally, very concerned about
deforestation, soil erosion and pollution due
to human interference and ignorance.
Collects enough funds to publish articles and
a magazine “Jeewan Lehar” to spread
awareness about these issues.
