This document discusses the design and analysis of the brake system for a formula student car. It aims to develop a formula SAE electric racing car that helps recover energy from braking forces using Matlab simulations. The brake system will be modified to enhance speed and safety by estimating an optimal braking ratio between the front and rear wheels.

DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF THE BODY FOR A FORMULA

STUDENT CAR

1
Executive Summary

This project is being focused on planning of design a formula student car which has aimed to
develop Four-cylinder 600 cc Sport bike engines. The design can be done by using Matlab
Simulink and braking and pattern strategy is being planned by using formula SAE.

1. Description of the artefact

1.1 Context of the project

“Four-cylinder 600 cc Sport bike engines” are generally used in the case of the “formula
student car” (Mercedesamgfl.com, 2021).

1.2 Aim and objective of the project

Aim

The braking pattern and strategy will be used in the case of a “formula SAE electric racing car”
for enhancing the recovery energy extent utilizing the relevant distribution pattern of brake
forces in between the front wheels and rear wheels.

Objective

 To develop formula SAE electric racing car that will help to recover energy from the
braking forces

1.3 List of feature that will include

In order to perform the betterment of the brake system, mathematical models and simulations
will be performed by Mat lab- Simulink methodology (Motorspot.tech, 2021). A hydraulic
braking system is generally used in the case of this type of car. Carbonic and ceramic braking
systems can be used in the case of racing cars.

1.4 Identify added value that the project provides

The brakes of the car will be modified for enhancing the speed level of the car and providing a
safety level to the racing cars (Laura, 2021). The design of the FSAE car brake system involves
the maximum extent of the capacity of the vehicles and the maneuverability of transports and
vehicles. By means of research, a calculated method of braking ratio among rear wheels and
front wheels can be estimated for locking four wheels simultaneously (Zeilinger et al. 2017).

1.5 Identify the intellectual challenges involved

The design of brake pedals has to be fabricated from aluminum or steel, that is they will be made
of titanium, aluminum, or steel (Norizan et al. 2019). The brake systems must require two

4
different independent types of Hydraulic circuits in order to prevent leaks or any failure.
Effective brakes of the hydraulic circuits must be formed and maintained on the two wheels at
least.

2. Methodology

2.1 Describe approach

Methods of the design can be carried out by OEM style rule behavior, every hydraulic circuit
needs to have its “own fluid reserve”; they are either in the form of separate reservoirs. It may
also be in a dammed OEM-style reservoir (Rahman et al. 2018). A single and simple brake
system that acts on to limited differential slip is much acceptable and the brake system is capable
of locking four wheels while test timings.

2.2 Justify approach

Brake pedals need to be designed for withstanding a force of the entire 2000N force without
failure in the brake system. Maximum break capacity will be used in the tyre model and
calculation for the ratio maintenance can be carried out by material selection and brake
dimension evaluation (Wirawan et al. 2018). Design manufacturing will be done for the
betterment of controllability, optimization of the vehicles. It is crucial locking up all wheels
simultaneously and the thermal analysis and structural have been carried out for doing the
experiments.

3. How does your project relate to your degree course and build upon the units/knowledge
you have studied/acquired

3.1 Highlight aspects

This project aims to understand the functionality of “Hydraulic brakes”. By introducing “twin
circuits” the force exerted on the pedal can be manipulated as well as optimised.
