QUESTION 1

Define the following terms …

1.1 Mass (2)

1.2 Energy (2)
1.3 Power (2)
1.4 Joule (2)
1.5 Efficiency (2)
[10]

QUESTION 2

You are leaving your house for several days and you want to leave the lights, the fridge, and
the television ON whilst you are away. Determine for how many days, hours, minutes, and
seconds can you operate the total 500W (i.e., lights, the fridge, and the television), so that the
cost does not exceed R150.00.

The cost of one kWh is R1.95c.

Assume: NO load shedding!

QUESTION 3

The heating element of a household electric kettle has a constant resistance of 26.45Ω and
applied voltage of 230V.

3.1. Calculate the time taken to raise the temperature of 1.7 liters of water from 25oC to
100oC, if only 87.5% of the power input to the kettle is usefully employed.
Given: The specific heat capacity of water is equal to 4190 J/kg.K

QUESTION 4

A circuit shown in figure 1 below consist of a series and parallel combination of

resistors where R4 has an unknown value. The power dissipated in R2 is 296W. The
whole circuit is connected across a 240V D.C. supply.

R3 = 36Ω

R1 = 12Ω R2 = 15Ω

R4 = ?

240V

Figure 1
4.1. Calculate the value of R4. (8)
4.2. Calculate the current through R3. (2)
[10]

QUESTION 5

With reference to the circuit in Figure 2 below, determine the value of …

5.1. The total resistance of the circuit (5)

5.2. The current flowing in resistor R5, using the current divider rule (5)
5.3. The voltage-drop across resister R3, using the voltage divider rule (3)
5.4. The energy dissipated by resistor R2 (2)
5.5. If the resistor tolerance is given as 5%. What is the colour coding of all the resistors in
the circuit. (5)
A
R1 = 15Ω

R2 = 150Ω R4 = 330Ω

E = 12V D.C.

R3 = 150Ω R5 = 12Ω R6 = 33kΩ
