• Draft and Cut Pattern for Children’s Dress
Objectives:
1. Explain the types of Skirt;
2. Discuss how to draft Balloon skirt pattern; and
3. Draft and lay out Balloon skirt pattern and;
4. Assemble the Balloon skirt.

Learning Task 1:
1. What are the different types of skirt suited for children’s dresses?
2. What are the types of skirt?

Learning Task 2:
SKIRTS
SKIRTS- a garment fastened around the waist and hanging down around the legs, worn by
women and girls.

Types of Skirts
o Pencil skirt- a very narrow straight skirt. Is a slim fitting skirt with a straight, narrow cut.
Generally, the hem falls to, or is just below the knee and is tailored for a close fit.
o Balloon skirt- A bubble skirt, also called tulip skirt or balloon skirt, is a
voluminous skirt whose hem is tucked back under to create a “bubble effect” at the bottom.
Popular in the 1950s
o Pleated skirt- A pleat (older plait) is a type of fold formed by doubling fabric back upon itself
and securing it in place. It is commonly used in clothing and upholstery to gather a wide
piece of fabric to a narrower circumference.
o Sheared or gathered skirt- a skirt whose fabric is drawn together around the waist.
o Peplum skirt- is a short, gathered, slightly flared strip of fabric attached at the waist of a
woman's blouse, jacket, skirt or dress.
o Bubble skirt –the top offender of all aughts trends was likely the bubble skirt. It had a hemline
that looped around.
Pattern for Balloon Skirt
Procedure:
1. Fold the materials and put the two selvages together.
2. Fold again on the diagonal grain as in illustration leaving on half inch from the selvage fold.
3. As certain a ¼ waist measurement from the curved waist line.
4. Apply the skirt length, measure from the curved waist line
5. Mark the hem from the skirt length.
6. Re-measure the total length from the apex to the bottom and pivot around the bottom width
as shown in diagram.
7. For the waist band measure 2 inches width.
