Genres of Viewing

BEGIN

Do you watch movies? What do you


enjoy most when it comes to viewing? In
watching movies, or any viewing materials,
there is always a purpose why writers and
scriptwriters write their literary works or
make motion pictures. Each of it is
categorized in different genres.

In this module, you will learn to


identify the genre of a movie or television
shows you watch. In the same way, by the
end of this module, you will be able to
determine the purpose of screenwriter.
Lastly, as the intended audience, you will
identify your own purpose before you view a
movie or television show.

I. WHAT IS GENRE?
Webster’s Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary of the English language defines
genre as a “category of artistic, musical or literary composition characterized by a
particular style, form or content.1

Genres in Viewing2

Animated are the cartoons you watch on television or in the movie house. The
themes may vary, as well as the target age group. Some are for kids, while
some are for teenagers.

Children shows are for children and are almost always educational. Sometimes
animated, sometimes unanimated.

Comedy shows are meant to entertain viewers, through spoofing, pranks, and
irony.

Drama is a show that uses serious, full of heavy emotions and sadness, tragedy,
conflict stories are presented.

Educational show is to highly inform the audience and can be intended for
children, teenagers, or adults. Most of these are in documentary format with
each episode focusing on a certain person, happening or theme.

Horror shows are intended to scare audience, usually by employing ghost,
spiritual warfare, unnatural event or preternatural scene.

Fantasy is a show that uses unrealistic character and plots, usually including
magic and supernatural creatures or powers. They may not be animated,
with a lot of visual effect.

Reality Television is a genre of television programming that documents the
actual, unscripted real-life situation. Example is Pinoy Big Brother of ABS-
CBN.

Variety Show is a show that includes games, song-and-dance performances,
and other segments.

Other Genres of Viewing3

News is a program which aims to inform the public audience about the latest
updates in the world, country and community.

News flash or sometimes called “news break” is an important interruption of news
which at times pauses other regular programs to flash the report to the
audience.

Movie Trailer is a short clip from a film. Its purpose is to introduce the upcoming
film as form of promotion of the movie.

Internet-based Program is a program that is informative that can be accessed
through the website.

Weather Report is usually a part of an entire news program that tells and
foretells weather conditions.

Documentary is a research–based reporting that gives specific factual records or
reports.

When you open your internet or watch television you


have to determine first why you would be watching or
browsing. Is it for academic purpose? Or is it for you to get
informed on world events?
So here, you will know your purpose and at the same way,
the purpose of the scriptwriter or the producer of the program.

II. Author’s Purpose4

The most known of author’s purpose are to persuade, to inform, and to entertain.

To persuade means the author convinces you to do something or believe
what they are saying. Example of this is advertisement.


To inform means the author wants to give you educational information about
the topic or an issue Example of this is a news report on television,
radio or newspaper.


To entertain means the author writes to tell you something that you will enjoy.
An example of this is folklore stories.

Now that you have learned the genres of viewing
and author’s purpose, let us now proceed to the last
topic which is the intended audience.
Does your parent guide you on what to view? In
the discussion, you will be able to know what program
you ought to watch. Consider yourself as one of the
audiences.

III. Intended Audience


Intended audience is defined as the group of people for which a service or product
is designed.5

A. Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) is a


Philippine government agency under the office of the President of the
Philippines that is responsible for the classification and review of television
programs, motion pictures, and home videos. It also serves as actual censorship
body.

MTRCB Audience Classification6

a) General Audience/General Patronage - viewers of all ages are admitted.


A “G” classification advises parents or supervising adults that the film, in the
judgment of the BOARD, is suitable for all audiences. The theme should not
contain violence, threat, abuse, horror, or may cause fear or disturbance to
a young child’s mind. It should promote positive values. The language may
contain dialogue or other word presentations beyond polite language but
swear words or gestures shall not be allowed. Profane, offensive, and
sexually-suggestive language or gestures shall not be allowed. The film
cannot contain and depict sexual activity. There shall be no depiction of
prohibited drugs or their use.” (ANG SUSUNOD NA PROGRAMA AY

b) Parental Guidance - viewers below 13 years old must be accompanied by
parent or supervising adult when admitted into a PG film. A “PG”
classification advises, parents or supervising adults that the film may contain
any of the following: themes, language, violence, nudity, sex and horror,
whose treatment is suitable for children below thirteen years of age. Material
for television, which, in the judgment of the BOARD, may contain some adult
material that maybe permissible for children to watch but only under the
guidance and supervision of a parent or adult. (ANG SUSUNOD NA

PATNUBAY AT GABAY NG MAGULANG PARA SA MGA BATANG

c) Restricted -13 (R13) – only viewers who are thirteen (13) years old and
above can be admitted. An “R-13” classification advises parents or
supervising adults, as well as the would-be viewers themselves, that the film
may contain any of the following: themes, language, violence, nudity, sex,
horror, and drugs whose treatment may not be suitable for children below
thirteen (13) years of age. (ANG PELIKULANG ITO AY RATED “R-13.”

d) STRONG PARENTAL GUIDANCE (SPG) – strong and more vigilant


parental guidance is suggested. Programs classified as “SPG” may contain
more serious topic and theme, which may not be advisable for children to
watch except under the very vigilant guidance and presence of a parent or

e) Restricted - 16 (R16) - a film classified “R-16” must be in the judgement of
the board meet the following criteria: Theme- there are no restrictions on
themes; provided that the treatment is appropriate for viewers who are at
least 16 years of age. The film may use any kind of language provided that
such use is justified by context, narrative, character development; and taking
into account the contemporary values and understanding of a Filipino viewer
who is at least 16 years of age. (ANG PELIKULANG ITO AY RATED “R-16.”

f) Restricted -18 (R18) - only viewers who are eighteen (18) years old and
above can be admitted into an R-18 film. An “R-18” classification advises
viewers, parents, and supervising adults that the film may contain any of the
following: themes, language, violence, nudity, sex, horror, and drugs that
may not be suitable for children below 18 years of age. An R-18 rating does
not mean that the film is “obscene”, “offensive”, or “pornographic,” as these

a particular style, form or content. Viewing genre is categorized as follows: Animated,
