PHYSICS NOTES

CH-11 MEASUREMENT AND MOTION

Learning Objectives: Key words:

❖ Understand the importance of • Unit
measurement • Physical quantities
❖ Analyse the ancient methods of • Traditional units and Standard units
measuring lengths • Submultiples and multiples
❖ Justify the need of standard units • Parallax error
of measurement
• Translatory motion
❖ Identify various physical
• Rectilinear and Curvilinear motion
quantities and their units.
• Circular motion
❖ Measure the length of an object
• Rotational motion
and length of curved line.
• Oscillatory motion
❖ Distinguish between various
• Vibratory motion
types of motions.
❖ Discuss the history of • Periodic and non-periodic motion
• Random motion
transportation.

Answer the following questions:

1. What are SI units? What are the advantages of SI units over traditional units?
Ans) SI system is internationally acceptable system of standard units.
Advantages of SI units over traditional units: -

➢ It is developed for the sake of uniformity in measurement. Hand span, cubit, foot
length etc. are based on the body parts are not accurate and reliable. They cannot
be considered as standard units of measurement as size of body parts vary from
person to person.
➢ The greatest advantage of SI is that it has only one unit for each quantity (type of
measurement). For example, the one and only SI unit of length is the meter (m)

2. What kind of error may happen when you are measuring the height of a person
taller than you? What should you do to avoid this error?
Ans) Parallax error may happen, because our eye level will be at lower position than his
head position. By this you will measure higher measurement than original. To avoid this,
bring a chair and stand on it so that our eye level comes to the same height as his head.

3. Explain with the help of example the position of rest & motion are relative
term
Ans) Motion and rest are relative terms. That means it all depends upon the observer who
is observing the object.
Example:
i. A person standing in a moving bus is at rest with respect to bus and is in
motion with respect to observer on the ground.
ii. A girl swinging in garden is in motion with respect to persons moving in
garden and at rest with respect to swing.

4. All circular motions are usually periodic but all periodic motions are not
circular why?
Ans) All periodic motions are not circular because they are not similar to each other.
Example

➢ Motion of the Moon around the Earth is periodic because it takes regular intervals of
time for revolving around the Earth. Moreover, it is periodic that’s why we see the
phases of moon on regular interval of time. At the same time the motion of the moon
around the Earth is along a circular path called Orbit.
➢ The motion of the pendulum is periodic motion but it is not circular motion.

5. If you are given an elastic measuring tape will you be able to measure the length
and width of a cricket pitch with it? Justify your answer.
Ans) No. An elastic measuring tape is stretchable. It cannot be used to measure distances
because the length of the tape may change on stretching. As a result, the measured length
would not be correct.

6. What is the similarity & differences between the motion of a car which is
slowing down and the ceiling fan moving with same speed?

Ans) Similarities between the motion of a car and a ceiling fan:

1. Blades of the fan and the wheels of a car are moving around a fixed point.
2. Both have circular motion about their respective fixed point.
Differences between the motion of a bicycle and a ceiling fan:
1. A car has a linear motion, whereas the blades of a ceiling fan do not have a linear
motion.
2. The motion of the blades of a fan is periodic, whereas the motion of a car is non
periodic motion.

7. Is the motion of the Moon around the Earth periodic? Give reason.
Ans) Yes. Motion of the Moon around the Earth is periodic because it takes regular
intervals of time for revolving around the Earth. Moreover, it is periodic that’s why we see
the phases of moon on regular interval of time.
8. Can a body have multiple type of motions at the same time? Explain with the
help of examples.
Ans) yes, the body can have multiple motions at the same time for example if you roll down
a ball through inclined then the ball will do the rotational motion as well as linear motion.
The earth rotates about its axis (rotatory motion) and at the same time it revolves around the
sun in a circular path (circular motion) in a fixed time interval (periodic motion).

9. Differentiate between rotational motion & circular motion.

Circular motion Rotational motion
The movement of a body along a A type of motion in which every point on the body
circular path is called circular moves around a fixed centre or axis of rotation,
motion. along a circular path without changing the radius
In circular a body moves around of its motion in a given time is called rotational
some other body. motion.
Eg: Motion of the Earth around the Eg:-Motion of a spinning top
Sun

10. If end of a ruler is broken then starts reading from 1.2 cm. The final reading of
pencil is 7.6 cm. What will be the actual reading of pencil?

Actual reading of the pencil = Final reading – starting point

= 7.6 – 1.2
= 6.4 cm

11. Convert 3/20 m = ……mm

1000mm = 1m

3/20 m = 𝑋 1000

= 150 mm
