BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

LEARNING MODULE
Business Research
Prepared by:

FLORENCIA A. OASAN, MBA

Instructor

Module 5
The RESEARCH PROPOSAL

OBJECTIVES OF THE MODULE

After studying the module, the students should be able to:
1. Explain the benefits delivered from a research proposal; and
2. Discuss the contents/parts of a research proposal
Research Proposal
This is the blueprint of the details of the operational plan of a particular project or investigation
that is being presented or review and approval. It indicates what will be done, why it will be done,
where it will be done, to whom it will be done, and what is the benefits accrue when it will be done.
Benefits of a Research Proposal
A. To the researcher
1. The proposal requires the researcher to put in writing the tentative work plan in a
methodical manner thus guiding him/her in the achievement of goals
2. The proposal compels the researcher to survey available literature related to the topic to
get a better idea what can be done and how the proposed can approached more
extensively.
3. The proposal serves as a guide for the researcher to follow in the actual implementation of
project or investigation.
4. The proposal obliges the researcher to follow deadline and targets.
5. The proposal becomes the primary basis for the preparation or the final research report.
B. The Schools/Sponsoring Organization

1. It enables the school/organization to assess the conceptual and technical competence of

the proponent based on the clarity, coherence, depth, and organization of the proposal.
2. It allows the school/organization to set the terms or reference which includes objectives and
expected output that will guide the researcher in preparing the proposal.
3. It provides the opportunity for the school/organization to give suggestions on how to
improve the objectives, framework and methodology.
4. It gives the school/organization, through its evaluations or panel of reviewers, and
opportunity to meet the proponent to clarify the contents of the proposal and to determine
through personal interaction the commitment and sincerity of the proponent and other
personal consideration necessary for proposal.

Parts of a Research Report

Title. It must be reflective of the general problem, short and concise, preferably not more than
two lines and written in the inverted pyramid form. The use of the phrase “A study of…” “An
evaluation of….,” “An assessment of…,” And the like should be avoided.
Abstract. This consist pf a brief and concise description of the problem investigated, the
research methodology, and the findings, conclusion and recommendation. It gives a “birds eye view”
of the research.
Rationale. This gives a background of the problem. It provides a brief description of the
problem situation (what is) with supporting facts and figures and includes a statement of the desired
condition (what should be) and the discrepancy between what is and what should be, and the
possible reasons for the discrepancy. It also discusses what is already known about the problem
based on literature.
Theoretical Framework. It explains in operational terms the assumed relationship
between/between among the major variables of the study. A schematic diagram of the assumed flow
of relationship between/among variables is presented.
Statement of the Problem. The general purpose of the research is stated, followed by the
specific questions of sub-problems. Each specific question must be clear and unequivocal (has only
one meaning) and researchable apart from the other question.
Assumptions (optional). In descriptive and historical researches, assumptions are not
explicitly expressed. Every specific question is simplicity based on an assumption.
Hypothesis (optional). If stated hypotheses are written in the null from of the study, the
variables, locale of the study, population, and the period of study.
Importance of the Study. It presents the contributions of the study as new knowledge and
cites its usefulness to specific groups.
Definition of terms. Important terms from the title, statement of the problem and research

paradigm are to be defined operationally. The terms should be arranged alphabetically. Acronyms
should be spell out.
Review of Literature and Studies. The literature and studies reviewed should be organized
thematically to conform to the specific problems. As much as possible, the reviewed materials should
be limited to those published within the last 10 years. The last part should state how the reviewed
materials had assisted the researcher.
Research Design. The appropriate research design should be specified and described.

Sources of Data. It describes the locale of the study and the population/sampling
Locale of the Study. It states and describes the place where the study was conducted and
rationale behind its choice.
Population/Sampling. It describes the population of interest and the sampling techniques
used.
Instrumentation and Data Collection. It describes the data gathering instruments, what is
measured, to whom it was administered and how it was administered.
Tools for Data Analysis. It discusses the statistical treatment applied for each group of data.
Presentation of Data. It presents the findings of the study in the order of the specific problems
as stated in the Statement of the Problem. The zoom lens approach may be used for purposes of
clarity in the presentation of data.
Analysis of Data. It contains an in-depth analysis of the data. Data may be analyzed
quantitatively or qualitative depending on the level of measurement, and the number of dimensions
and variables of the study. Table reading should be avoided. If sub-problem requires correlation, the
level of correlation and whether it is positive or negative should be stated. The level of significance
should also be indicated. For difference of measures, the obtained results are stated and the level of
significance of the differences is indicated.
Interpretation of Data. This discusses the implication(s) of the analyzed data. The findings
are linked with those of previous studies and literature.
Summary. It contains a restatement of the problem and sub-problems (in paragraph form), the
research design and the salient findings.
Recommendation. This lists down the recommendation of the researcher based on the
findings and conclusion drawn for the study.
