Objective:

Demonstrate the
importance of having
an active faith
The writer does not
expound on doctrine
or theology but more
on the practical
aspects of how to live
as a true, mature
Christian.
The letter also gives
a clear picture of
the life and
practices of the
early church
communities.
1. “The testing of your faith makes you
steadfast. If any of you is lacking in wisdom,
ask God who gives to all easily and
unconditionally. But ask with faith, not
doubting, for the one who doubts is like a
wave driven and tossed on the sea by the
wind: (Jas 1:3, 5-6).
 Trials must be borne with patience
because they actually help a person
grow stronger.

 Wisdom helps a person in making

decisions and choices in life. If a person
lacks wisdom, he may ask God for it,
without doubting that the Lord will give
it to him.
2. “Be quick to hear but slow in
anger, for human does not fulfill the
justice of God”(Jas 1:10-20). Be
doers of the Word and not just
hearers, lest you deceive yourselves”
(Jas 1:22).
 Listen quick to hear and prudently, keep
your temper. Respond to God’s Word by
accepting it and putting it into action
.
 To simply listen without doing anything
will not bring you closer to God and you
are only fooling yourself.
3. “My brothers and sisters, if you truly
believe in our glorified Lord, Jesus
Christ, you will not discriminate
between persons”(Jas 2:1).
 James enjoins the churches to treat all
equally, whether rich or poor in keeping
with their faith in keeping with faith in
Jesus Christ who enjoined everyone to
“love your neighbor as you love
yourself”.
4. “What good is it my brothers
and sisters, to profess faith
without showing works?...
 True faith must be expressed in
deeds of love.
 Holiness cannot be attained by faith
alone. It must be expressed in
service in service and love of
neighbor.
5. A person who commits no offense
in speech is perfect and capable of
ruling the whole self”(Jas 3:2).the
tongue is a tiny part of the body but is
capable of great things…(Jas 3:5).
 James advises those who teach in the
community to be prudent in the use of
speech, for teachers will be quickly
judged by those who hear them.

 A mature Christians who is able to

control his speech is capable of
controlling his whole self.
6. “What causes these fights and quarrels
among you? Is it not your cravings that make
war within your own selves? When you long
for something you cannot have, you kill it and
when you do not get what you desire, you
squabble and fight…
Ambitions and selfish desires lead to
quarrels. We should refrain from
criticizing and judging one another. A
wrongdoing can be pointed out and
corrected but it must be done in the spirit
of love and the person himself must not
be condemned.
7. “You deceived the workers who
harvested your fields but now their wages
cry out to the heavens…”(Jas 5:4).
James admonishes the rich who pile up
riches at the expense of workers who are
not justly paid. The Church teaches the
“A just wage is the legitimate fruit of
work. To refuse or withhold it can be a
grave injustice”(CCC 2434).
