Systems Thinking&Design Course Abstract - MDes21FID

This document outlines a course on system thinking and design. The 10 week course aims to teach students to understand relationships between spaces, products, systems and services using a systems approach. Students will apply these concepts to a design project and demonstrate their understanding of how components interact within a system.

Course Name : System Thinking & Design

Credits : 40
Duration : 10 Weeks
Master of Design (MDes 2022 Batch) Furniture & Interior Design

Relevance

System oriented Design uses Systems thinking approach to capture and look at
complex systems. It is the process of understanding how things, regarded as
systems, influence one another within a whole. The nature of the whole system is
always different from, and more than, the sum of its unassembled collection of parts.
This course seeks to offer a design problem, which brings together aspects of
people, technology, and business within a specific ecosystem.

The constituent parts of this ecosystem have to be identified, and the underlying
problem should be addressed through the adoption of a systems thinking approach
to problem solving.

This project involves the application of the systems approach towards a design
problem. Theme based projects are undertaken which can cover a wide range of
problem areas. The emphasis is on the understanding of interrelationships that make
a coherent whole.

Objective
To understand the relationship between spaces, products, systems, and services. To
study the various components of a system and its sub systems in relation to each
other and as a whole system. To understand a behaviours and patterns of the
systems.
To understand the aspects of systems approach. To understand how a system is
capable of interchangeable components to give a variety of combinations.
To achieve a systems approach to space & product development by evolving
modularity in elements.

Outcome :
Systems approach to design takes into consideration the orderly as well as chaotic
interaction and interrelationship of material objects, spaces, symbols/ communication
and services/ activities in a given context.

By the end of the course students should be able: To understand the systemic and
contextual needs of the stakeholders, people in relation to spaces, products,
services and systems. To understand the basic theoretical understanding of general
systems theory, systems thinking and systems oriented approach as applied to
varied contexts for problem solving. To demonstrate understanding through design
of a system for a given chosen context.

Course Contents
• Understanding systems thinking as it applies to space, product development.
• Development of a set of criteria to understand an existing scenario and work
out system elements those are essential for a set of functions.
• Establish basic elements and growth possibilities or inter-relationships that
require to be established.
• Develop systems model.
• Develop design brief for potential interventions.
• Develop sketches, scale models, prototypes, drawings, scenarios, simulations
and other supporting documents to explain fully the possibilities of the system.
• Detail out proposed solutions and test in suitable fidelity.
• Refine solution and project impact of solution on the existing system.
Final documentation of the project experience and submission for final
assessment.

Methodology

Theory sessions through lectures, discussions, and library references.

Empirical study of a given context through observation and recording followed by
analysis, synthesis, and inferences.

Visual presentation of ideas/ concepts in studio/ classroom followed by discussions

Preparation of mock-up models/ final models Documentation of the learning and
submission for assessment.

The class will offer studio-based learning supported by tutor’s, mentor’s

presentations and guidance. The class will be made up of lectures and class
presentations. At each stage of the project students will have specific deliverables,
which they will present to class in designated review sessions. Students are
expected to attend all classes/lectures, participate in interactive group discussions,
engage in class exercises, complete all assignments and submit a mid-term report
and a final project report documenting their process and output at each stage.
Assignments will be both individual and in teams.
