Short Questions

The document discusses a power modulator that can control the output power of an electrical supply and limit current drawn from the power source. It can change direct current into alternating current as needed by an induction motor. Different classes of motor duty are categorized including continuous, short time, intermittent periodic, and others. Components of load torque on a motor include friction, windage, and torque required to do useful mechanical work.

Power Modulator

This modulator can be used to control the o/p power of the supply. The power
controlling of the motor can be done in such a way that the electrical
motor sends out the speed-torque feature which is necessary with the load.
During the temporary operations, the extreme current will be drawn from the
power source.
The drawn current from the power source may excess it otherwise can cause
a voltage drop. Therefore the power modulator limits the motor current as
well as the source.

The power modulator can change the energy based on the motor
requirement. For instance, if the basis is direct current & an induction motor
can be used after that power modulator changes the direct current
into alternating current. And it also chooses the motor’s mode of operation
like braking otherwise motoring.

Intermittent Periodic Duty

Here the motor operates for some time and then there is rest period. In
both cases, the time is insufficient to raise the temperature to steady state
value or cool it off to ambient temperature. This is seen at press and
drilling machine drives.
Short Time Duty
In these motors, the time of operation is very low and the heating time is
much lower than the cooling time. So, the motor cooks off to ambient
temperature before operating again. These motors are used in crane drives,
drives for house hold appliances, valve drives etc.

Classes of Motor Duty in Electrical Drives:

IS: 4722-1968 categorises various load time variations encountered in

practice into eight standard Classes of Motor Duty in Electrical Drives:

1. Continuous duty.

2. Short time duty.

3. Intermittent periodic duty.

4. Intermittent periodic duty with starting.

5. Intermittent periodic duty with starting and braking.

6. Continuous duty with intermittent periodic loading.

7. Continuous duty with starting and braking.

8. Continuous duty with periodic speed changes.

Components of Load Torques:

Components of Load Torques Tl can be further divided into following

components:

(i) Friction torque TF :

Friction will be present at the motor shaft and also in various parts of the
load. TF is equivalent value of various friction torques referred to the motor
shaft.

(ii) Windage torque, Tw :

When a motor runs, wind generates a torque opposing the motion. This is
known as windage torque.

(iii) Torque required to do the useful mechanical work, TL:
