Prof. Acheampong

ENC 1102

17 January, 2024

Coming into this class I was immediately intrigued when we spent the first couple days

analyzing memes and talking about movies/television shows. Taking a bit of a more modern

approach to learning really helped me grasp the many learning outcomes that we’ve discussed in

this class. Collaborating with my peers for each class has also helped me gain new perspectives

on how different people analyze texts. A universal thing I keep hearing in every single class is

that there is no one right answer to concepts we’re talking about. Everyone can have different

viewpoints and that is perfectly okay.

I specifically enjoyed learning about the C.A.R.S. method and all of its aspects. It’s

important to establish a territory while writing along with establishing/occupying a niche. I feel

as if it’s very common for writers to go through something called “writer’s block.” That’s why I

feel as if it’s necessary to plan out papers and to try various methods such as making a bulleted

list or outline. I’ve also learned the meaning of exigence which is any leading force for a piece of

literature. It really represents the drive and/or motivation for writing about a specific subject by

the author such as what we discussed in the reading on J. Cole and his impact on black religion

and culture through music.

As for my reflection on my growth I feel as if I’ve gained a lot of valuable information

about ways to critique my writing and make it more structured. I enjoyed learning about the

mind map concept as I find myself doing methods such as bulleting and I want to get myself to

try more things like visual outlining, asking rhetorical questions, and really engaging in entering

myself into the conversation whatever that may be. A challenge I’ve faced is being in a group

setting as I’m more of an introvert that prefers keeping my ideas to myself rather than sharing

them in small groups. However, I feel as if this is helping me get more experience in the real

world as I plan to use situations like this to get peer reviews for scientific papers or attend large

lectures as a member of the S.T.E.M. community in my future.

Tying everything together, I feel as if this reflection shows valuable insights on my first

impressions in this class. I can only grow from here, and I feel like looking back on this later will

help me realize how far I’ve continued to grow. I now have more of an open mindset and am

more comfortable with the idea of peer interactions to better myself as a writer. As for overall

academic development, being able to go a bit out of my comfort zone in this class will make for

bright future endeavors. Getting used to peer collaboration now and making valuable insights at

other people’s thoughts will better prepare me for situations both inside and outside of the

classroom.
