This module will be utilized by the Grade six pupils so that their
understandings on what mixtures and their characteristics shall be applied in their
everyday lives. They are the air we breathe, the food and water drink and consume,
the herbal medicines and the fabric we wear.

By studying mixtures and their characteristics, you will start to discover more
ideas by doing the activities yourself with less help from your teacher. So read and
learn more about mixtures.

Materials:

sugar oil glasses egg yolk

water fork Teaspoon Sandy soil

Procedure:

1. Put one teaspoon of sugar in a glass with water and then stir. Describe what
happens.

2. Get another glass and fill it with water. Then, place some sandy soil in it.
Record your observations.

3. Mix 1 tablespoon of oil and 2 tablespoons of water. Observe. Now, add one
tablespoon of egg yolk. Using a fork, continuously beat the mixture. Describe
what happens.

What is It

Mixture are either homogenous or heterogeneous.

A homogenous mixture (solution) is a mixture of element and /or


compounds that has a uniform composition.

A heterogeneous mixture contains components that can be separated into


physically distinct regions of differing properties.

How are they beneficial and useful to us?
- Mixture are just important as elements, compounds or alloys.
- In fact, the air that we are breathing right now is a mixture of oxygen,
nitrogen and some lesser gases!
- Mixture are used in many processes, including medicine in the chemical
industry,
- Mixture are useful when you want to combine elements of multiple
materials into one product,
- Mixture are used in cooking, washing and cleaning at home.
Mixtures can be a:
1. Liquid – Liquid Mixtures
Ex:
a. Alcoholic beverages – it is a mixture of ethanol (liquid) in water (liquid).
b. Vinegar – a solution of acetic acid (a liquid when pure) in water.

2. Liquid – Gas Mixtures


Ex:
a. Water in the Air – a mixture of water (liquid) in the air (gas).
b. Fizzy drinks – mixture of water (liquid) and carbon dioxide (gas).

3. Solid – Solid Mixtures


Ex:
a. Concrete – is a mixture of cement (solid) and gravel (solid).
b. Metal Alloys – the best example is steel which is an alloy of iron and
carbon, often with additional of other metal elements added in to provide
special like chromium and nickel to make stainless steel.
