1. Given that √x can be written in the form 2x p – xq,

(a) write down the value of p and the value of q.

2 x 2 −x 2
Given that y = 5x4 – 3 + √x ,

dy
(b) find dx , simplifying the coefficient of each term.
(4)

2. The curve C has equation

y = x3 – 2x2 – x + 9, x > 0.

The point P has coordinates (2, 7).

(a) Show that P lies on C.

(1)
(b) Find the equation of the tangent to C at P, giving your answer in the form y = mx + c,
where m and c are constants.
(5)

The point Q also lies on C.

Given that the tangent to C at Q is perpendicular to the tangent to C at P,

1
(c) show that the x-coordinate of Q is 3 (2 + 6).

Figure 3 shows a flowerbed. Its shape is a quarter of a circle of radius x metres with two
equal rectangles attached to it along its radii. Each rectangle has length equal to x metres and
width equal to y metres.

Given that the area of the flowerbed is 4m2,

(a) show that

16−π x 2
y= 8x .
(3)
(b) Hence show that the perimeter P metres of the flowerbed is given by the equation

8
P = x + 2x.
(3)
(c) Use calculus to find the minimum value of P. (5)
(d) Find the width of each rectangle when the perimeter is a minimum.
Give your answer to the nearest centimetre.
