What is Google Earth?
• It is a geobrowser that accesses satellite and aerial
imagery, ocean bathymetry, and other geographic data
over the internet to represent the Earth as a three-
dimensional globe.
• It enables individuals to create, store, view, and interact
with data as it relates to location
• Currently, there are four active versions of Google
Earth: the desktop app Google Earth Pro, open-
source Google Earth Enterprise, browser-
based Google Earth 9, and Google Earth VR.
• Available for download as a desktop or mobile
application
Google Earth is originally
known as?

KEYHOLE
History of Google Earth
• January 2001: Keyhole Founded
• John Hanke, Brian McClendon, and a small team of engineers
founded Keyhole in January 2001 with the goal of merging “vectors,
images, and POIs into a single, seamless dataset to create the
ultimate geographic reference platform.
• June 2003: In-Q-Tel Invests
• The CIA’s strategic investment branch, In-Q-Tel, announced an
investment in the company based on the software's ability "radically
enhance critical decision making." They quickly put it to use
monitoring military operations in Iraq after Operation.
• October 2004: Google Purchases Keyhole
• Google announced their acquisition of Keyhole for an undisclosed
amount. Google stated that the product’s rich database of roads,
business, and points of interests, as well as their unique 3D interface,
motivated the purchase.
Cont.

After Google Earth acquired Keyhole, they

launched four products:
• Google Earth (Free)
• A free product targeted at users who only wanted to
explore imagery stored in the GE database.
• Google Earth Plus ($20)
• For the more advanced user, the plus version allowed
users to add their own data. It was discontinued in
2008, when most of its features were rolled into the
free version.
Cont.

• Google Earth Pro ( $400)

• Targeted at businesses needing to research,
collaborate, and present on geo-spatial data, the pro
version gave users advanced capabilities like
measurements, data integration, and high-resolution
imagery.
• Google Earth Enterprise
• A fully customized solution for large-scale businesses
that require geo-spatial data in their day-to-day
operations.
History of Google Earth (cont.)

• January 2007: Google Earth 4 Released

• offered a cleaner user interface, updated 3D modelling capabilities,
and a new time animation feature for showing historical data, as well
as a host of smaller features
History of Google Earth (cont.)

• February 2009: Google Earth 5 Released

• expanded historical imagery visualizations, the ability to explore the
ocean, and a new recording feature that allowed you to capture and
share a “tour” of locations in the software
History of Google Earth (cont.)

• November 2010: Google Earth 6 Released

• smoother StreetView integration, addition of 3D modelling for trees,
and a smoother update to historical imaging
History of Google Earth (cont.)

• Google Earth 7 Released

• final major update before the company made all editions free, saw
the release of new 3D imagery and a tour guide feature that would
take users through famous landmarks
Google Earth Pro vs. Google Earth
Exploring GE’s User Interface
• Top Menu - offers the user a selection of tools
such as the ‘Ruler’ tool for measurement and
the “Camera” tool for creating tours.
• Left Screen - The left part of the screen gives
you three areas of interest from top to bottom
Cont.

• Right Screen - The right screen allows the user to

explore the globe using the controls or the mouse.
Cont.
• Tilting and Viewing Hilly Terrain
Cont.

• Street View
• Search for a place or address using the Search Tab
• Drag Pegman to a place on the map
Google Earth Keyboard Shortcuts
(Windows OS)
KML
• KML or Keyhole Markup Language is a file format used
to display geographic data in an Earth browser such as
Google Earth.
• KML uses a tag-based structure with nested elements
and attributes and is based on the XML standard
• Basic KML Documents
• Placemarks
• Paths
• Polygons
• Ground/Image Overlays
