LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET NO. 4

Exponential Functions, Equations, and Inequalities

Name of the Learner : ________________________________________ Section : _______________

School : ________________________________________ Date : _______________

I. Learning Competency/ies:
The learner:
1. distinguish among exponential function, exponential equation and exponential inequality.
(M11GM-Ie-4)

II. Key Concepts:

➢ Definitions:
✓ Exponential expression
An expression of the form a𝑎 ∙ 𝑏 𝑥−𝑐 + 𝑑, 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 (𝑏 > 0, 𝑏 ≠ 1).
✓ Exponential Equation
An equation involving exponential expression. It uses equality sign (=).

Steps I am Example
Given 1
1. 72𝑥 =343

Write the exponent The exponent is 2𝑥

Identify the sign used The sign used in the expression is =
Give the conclusion Therefore the given expression is Exponential Equation

✓ Exponential Inequality
An Inequality involving exponential expression. It uses inequalities signs
(<, ≤, ≥, >)

Steps I am Example
2𝑥 𝑥+1
Given 2. 5 −5 ≤0

Write the exponent The exponent is 2𝑥 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 + 1

Identify the sign used The sign used is 𝑙𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑛 𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑙 (≤)
Give the conclusion Therefore the given expression is Exponential Inequality

✓ Exponential Function
A function of the form 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑏 𝑥 𝑜𝑟 𝑦 = 𝑏 𝑥 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑏 >
0,𝑏 ≠ 1

Steps I am Example
Given 3. 𝑓 𝑥 = 1.8𝑥
( )

Write the exponent The exponent is x

Identify the sign used The sign used is =
Give the conclusion Therefore the expression is Exponential function because it
is in the form 𝑓(𝑥 ) = 𝑏 𝑥 𝑜𝑟 𝑦 = 𝑏 𝑥 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑏 > 0 , 𝑏 ≠ 1

GENERAL MATHEMATICS QUARTER 1, WEEK 4A | LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

✓ None of these
The expression is not Exponential Equation, Exponential Inequalities and
Exponential Function.

Given 4. 𝑓(𝑥 ) = 2𝑥 3

Write the exponent The exponent is 3

Identify the sign used The sign used is =
Give the Conclusion Therefore, the expression is None of these because the
exponent must have the variable x not the base.

III. Guided Practice:

➢ Direction: Supply the missing value in the blank provided. Identify whether the given
exponential expression is Exponential Function, Exponential Equation, Exponential
Inequality and None of These.

Steps Try Me
Given 1. ) 𝑦 = 2𝑥

Write the exponent The exponent is .

Identify the sign used The sign used is .
Give the conclusion Therefore the expression is .
.
Given 2. ) 𝑓(𝑥 ) = 𝑥 + 1

Write the exponent The exponent is .

Identify the sign used The sign used is .
Give the conclusion Therefore the expression is .
Given 3. ) 4𝑥+1 = 16𝑥

Write the exponent The exponent is .

Identify the sign used The sign used is .
Give the conclusion Therefore the expression is .
Given 4. ) 2𝑥 ≥ 26

Write the exponent The exponent is .

Identify the sign used The sign used is .
Give the Conclusion Therefore the expression is .

IV. Independent Practice:

Direction: Determine whether the given is an exponential function, an exponential equation, an

exponential inequality or none of these.
Example. 𝑦 = 74𝑥 answer: Exponential Function

1. 𝑦 = 5𝑥 2 answer: 4. 10𝑥−2 = 500 answer:

1
2. 2 ≥ (2)𝑥 answer: 5. 3 ≥ 9𝑥−1 answer:

3. 𝑦 = 74𝑥 answer: 6. 𝑓(𝑥) = 0.5𝑥 answer: ______

GENERAL MATHEMATICS QUARTER 1, WEEK 4A | LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

V. Guided Question:

How are you going to identify if it is an exponential function? Or exponential equation or

inequality?

VI. Applications:
➢ Real-Life Situations Using Exponential Function.

Compound Interest
1.) Suppose that a couple invested P50,000 in an account when their child was born, to prepare for
the child's college education. If the average interest rate is 4.4% compounded annually a.) How
much money will be after 4 years?
Solution:
Given
P=P50,000.00 r = 4.4% t = 4 years compounded annually
Formula (compounded interest)
𝐴 = 𝑃(1 + 𝑟)𝑡
𝐴 = 50,000(1 + 0.044)4
𝐴 = 50,000(1.044)4
𝐴 = 50,000(1.044)4
𝐴 = 50,000(1.187960484096)
𝐴 = 59, 398.024
Therefore, the amount accumulated after 4 years is P59, 398.024

Population Growth
2.) At time t = 0, 1000 bacteria are in a petri dish, and this amount triples every 15 days.
a. How many bacteria are in the petri dish after 45 days?
b. Give an exponential model for the bacteria as a function of t?
Solution:
At t = 0, the amount of bacteria is 1000
At t = 15 days, the amount of bacteria is
15
𝑓(𝑡) = 1000(3)15 = 3000
At t = 30 days, the amount of bacteria is
30
𝑓(𝑡) = 1000(3)15 = 9000
At t = 45 days, the amount of bacteria is
45
𝑓(𝑡) = 1000(3)15 = 27000
Therefore, the exponential model
𝑡
𝑓(𝑡) = 1000(3)15
