1.0 SCOPE
This SEC Transmission Material Standard Specification (TMSS) specifies the minimum
technical requirements for design, engineering, manufacture, inspection testing and
performance of compression type connectors for overhead transmission lines intended to be
used on outdoor bare overhead transmission lines in the Transmission System of Saudi
Electricity Company (SEC), Saudi Arabia. This standard does not specifically address the
connectors required for special conductors such as high temperature low sag (heat-resistant).
These connectors shall be compatible with the type of conductors and per recommendations
of the manufacturers.
This Transmission Material Standard Specification shall be read in conjunction with the
latest revision of SEC Transmission General Specification No. 01-TMSS-01 titled “General
Requirements for all Equipments/Materials” which shall be considered as an integral part of
this TMSS.
This TMSS shall also be read in conjunction with SEC Transmission Purchase Order or
Contract Schedules for project, as applicable.
The latest revisions of the following Codes and Standards shall be applicable for the
equipment/material covered in this TMSS. The vendor/manufacturer may propose
equipment/material conforming to equivalent Industry Codes and Standards other than that
quoted hereunder without jeopardizing the requirements of this TMSS, in which case he
shall submit a copy of the proposed standards and shall submit a written proof that the
proposed standards in all significant respects are equal to or better than those specified.

continuous shall not be less than that of an equivalent length of conductor.
4.3 Ratings
When installed as an assembly, the compression connectors shall have the following
ratings:
The repair sleeve shall restore the conductor to ninety five percent
(95%) of conductor rated strength on conductors with up to one-third
(1/3) of the aluminum strands damaged.
d. Slipping strength of jumper terminals shall not be less than twenty five
percent (25%) of conductor strength.
4.3.2 All compression connectors shall be corona free at a voltage of 55kV, 100kV,
185kV and 300kV line-to-ground for 69kV, 110/115/132kV, 230kV and
380kV transmission lines respectively.

4.4 Materials
4.4.1 The compression sleeve, barrel and keeper of the aluminum compression
connectors shall be made from wrought aluminum alloy compatible with the
material of conductor to be used.

TRANSMISSION MATERIALS STANDARD SPECIFICATION 12-TMSS-02, Rev. 01
4.4.2 The steel metal parts of the compression dead-end and mid span splice shall
be made from forged steel.
4.4.3 Nuts, bolts, and washers to connect jumper terminal pad with the dead-end
compression terminal pad shall be made of aluminum or stainless steel. The
bolts, nuts and washers shall be of minimum 12 mm diameter.
4.4.4 The steel metal parts shall be galvanized in accordance with General
Specification 01-TMSS-01.
4.4.5 The aluminum metal parts shall be anodic oxide coated in accordance with
ASTM B580.
4.4.6 The compression connectors for making connections between aluminum and
copper conductors shall be hot-tin coated aluminum bodied connectors.
4.5 Fabrication
4.5.1 The compression dead-end and mid span splice for ACSR/AW type
conductors shall be of two-piece compression type consisting of inner steel
sleeve for joining steel core and an outer aluminum sleeve for connecting
aluminum strands. The aluminum sleeve shall be provided with filler hole and
aluminum plug for filler (oxide inhibiting or sealing) compound. Appropriate
filler compound shall be supplied as part of the compression connectors.
4.5.2 The compression dead-end and mid span splice for AAAC and ACAR type
conductors shall be of one-piece compression type and shall be prefilled with
an appropriate filler (oxide inhibiting or sealing) compound and capped.
Compression dead end tongue (pad) shall be fabricated from the flat
aluminum alloy plates and welded to the compression dead end.
4.5.4 The compression dead end tongue (pad) and jumper terminal pad shall each
be constructed with a 15º angle, to permit the terminal connector to be bolted
in either the straight or in the 30º position. Both sides of the pad shall have
even electrical contact surfaces.
4.5.5 The jumper sleeve shall be one piece compression type, prefilled with an
appropriate filler (oxide inhibiting or sealing) compound and capped. It shall
be possible to use any jumper terminal with any dead-end terminal pad and to
connect the two-bolt pads with four-bolt pads.
4.5.6 The compression type repair sleeve shall consist of interlocking body and
keeper parts when compressed. This shall provide locking against relaxation
of the parts, resulting in a permanent grip on the conductors.
4.5.7 The tee-tap connectors shall be of open-run type cable to flat connection.
4.5.8 For extra-high voltage application (230kV and above), connectors shall have
rounded edges and corners for suppression of corona discharges.
4.5.9 The ends of compression accessories (midspan joints, dead ends and jumper
terminals) shall be tapered in such a manner that the pressure shall be
gradually reduced to zero on that part of the conductor leaving the accessory
and that the conductor stresses caused from bending and vibration are reduced
to a minimum.
4.5.10 Where mating surfaces of jumper terminals are to be bolted to the main body
of the tension clamp, they shall be factory protected by removable plastic or
other means acceptable to SEC.
4.5.11 Repair sleeves shall consist of two interlocking parts of aluminum alloy
suitable for compressing over the conductor.
4.6 Markings
5.0 TESTS
All test results shall be provided for review and acceptance by SEC.
span splice, repair sleeve and Tee Tap connector) shall be assembled in accordance
with the manufacturer’s recommendations on the conductors of the size and type
with which these are to be used. The conductor to be used for these tests shall be
arranged by the manufacturer. Test results shall be submitted to SEC for review &
approval.
The assembly when tested in accordance with IEC 61284 or ANSI C119.4
shall withstand a load of minimum ninety five percent (95%) of the rated
strength of the conductor. There shall be no movement of the conductor
relative to the connector and no failure of the connector due to slip during
one-minute hold period at ninety percent (90%) of the conductor rated
strength.
In lieu of the actual type tests, certified type test reports of tests performed on
an identical unit may be submitted to SEC for review and approval during the
bidding stage.
a. Resistance Test
A tensile load of about twenty percent (20%) of the rated strength of the
conductor shall be applied to the assembly and shall be tested in
accordance with IEC-61284 or ANSI C119.4. Test current shall be
passed continuously through the assembly for period as may be
necessary to raise the conductor temperature 100oC above the ambient
temperature. The current shall then be interrupted and the conductor
shall be allowed to cool within 5oC above the ambient temperature. The
sequence of operations shall be repeated for 500 cycles of heating and
cooling.
During the last five cycles the maximum temperature measured when
the current is flowing at any point on the surface of compression
connector, shall not exceed that of the conductor. At the end of the test
the connector shall meet the requirements of the resistance test specified
above. The connectors when opened shall not show any sign of local
heating, burning or fusing of any part of the connector or of the
conductor, as a result of this test.
Fault current test shall be carried out in accordance with ANSI C119.4.
The fault current shall be as specified in 01-TMSS-01.
Sample tests to be carried out on the compression connectors shall include but not be
limited to the following:
5.2.3 Dimensional Tests: These shall include length and diameter of the connectors
before and after compression and percentage elongation.
