ACI Mix Design Example

The document provides steps for designing an ACI concrete mix. It details selecting slump, aggregate size, water and air content, water-cement ratio, and calculating cement, coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, and water content. Adjustments are made for aggregate moisture and free water on aggregates. The final summary provides the ingredients and ratios for 1m3 and 1yd3 of 4000psi concrete.

ACI Mix Design

Step 1. Choice of slump.

𝑆𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑝 = 25 − 50𝑚𝑚
Step 2. Choice of maximum size of aggregate.
Most common aggregate used in day-to-day construction in Guyana is ¾”.
This will be the size of aggregate being used in this example.
Step 3. Estimation of mixing water and air content.

𝑀𝑖𝑥𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑊𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 = 190𝑘𝑔/𝑚3

𝐴𝑖𝑟 𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑡 = 2%
Step 4. Selection of water/cement ratio.

The selection of this is dependent on what strength you are looking for.
In this case we want a 4000psi concrete.
Step 5. Calculation of cement content.
𝑤𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟
𝑊𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑐𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 =
𝑊𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 − 𝑐𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜

190𝑘𝑔/𝑚3
𝑊𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑐𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 =
0.57
𝑊𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑐𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 = 334𝑘𝑔/𝑚3
Step 6. Estimation of coarse aggregate content.
The fineness modulus I obtained for fine aggregates was set out to be 2.40 so that’s why I
selected that value.
𝐶𝑜𝑎𝑟𝑠𝑒 𝐴𝑔𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑔𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑅𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜 = 0.66
Using your dry rodded weight, you can determine the amount of coarse aggregates required.
Mine was made out to be:
8.43 − 3.04
𝐷𝑟𝑦 𝑅𝑜𝑑𝑑𝑒𝑑 𝑊𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 =
1⁄
20
𝐷𝑟𝑦 𝑅𝑜𝑑𝑑𝑒𝑑 𝑊𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 = 107.8𝑝𝑐𝑓
𝐷𝑟𝑦 𝑅𝑜𝑑𝑑𝑒𝑑 𝑊𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 = 1727𝑘𝑔/𝑚3
𝑊𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝐶𝑜𝑎𝑟𝑠𝑒 𝐴𝑔𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑔𝑎𝑡𝑒 = 1727𝑘𝑔/𝑚3 × 0.66
𝑊𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝐶𝑜𝑎𝑟𝑠𝑒 𝐴𝑔𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑔𝑎𝑡𝑒 = 1140𝑘𝑔/𝑚3
Step 7. Estimation of Fine Aggregate Content.
Use the specific Gravity of each item.
Using Absolute Volume Method:
Water Volume:
190𝑘𝑔/𝑚3
𝑊𝑉 =
(1 × 1000)
𝑊𝑉 = 0.19𝑚3 /𝑚3
Cement Volume:
334𝑘𝑔/𝑚3
𝐶𝑉 =
(3.15 × 1000)
𝐶𝑉 = 0.106𝑚3 /𝑚3
Air Volume:
𝐴𝑉 = 0.02𝑚3 /𝑚3
Coarse Aggregate Volume:
1140𝑘𝑔/𝑚3
𝐶𝐴𝑉 =
(2.6 × 1000)
𝐶𝐴𝑉 = 0.438𝑚3 /𝑚3
We presume the sum of concrete to be 1, so we subtract the contents above from the sum of
concrete to get the volume of fine aggregate.
∑ = 0.754𝑚3 /𝑚3

1 = 0.754 + 𝐹𝐴𝑉
𝐹𝐴𝑉 = 1 − 0.754
𝐹𝐴𝑉 = 0.246𝑚3 /𝑚3
Convert this volume into a weight.
𝑊𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝑎𝑔𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑔𝑎𝑡𝑒 = (0.246 × 2.66 × 1000)
𝑊𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝑎𝑔𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑔𝑎𝑡𝑒 = 655𝑘𝑔/𝑚3
Step 8. Adjustments for Aggregate Moisture.
I assume the moisture and absorption of Coarse Aggregates to be 1.5% and 0.4% respectively.
I assume the moisture and absorption of Fine Aggregates to be 4% and 0.8% respectively.
Correction for Coarse Aggregates:
𝑀𝑜𝑖𝑠𝑡 𝐴𝑔𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑔𝑎𝑡𝑒 = 1140 × 0.015
𝑀𝑜𝑖𝑠𝑡 𝐴𝑔𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑔𝑎𝑡𝑒 = 1140 − 17.1
𝑀𝑜𝑖𝑠𝑡 𝐴𝑔𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑔𝑎𝑡𝑒 = 1123𝑘𝑔/𝑚3
Correction for Fine Aggregates:
𝑀𝑜𝑖𝑠𝑡 𝐴𝑔𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑔𝑎𝑡𝑒 = 655 × 0.04
𝑀𝑜𝑖𝑠𝑡 𝐴𝑔𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑔𝑎𝑡𝑒 = 655 − 26.2
𝑀𝑜𝑖𝑠𝑡 𝐴𝑔𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑔𝑎𝑡𝑒 = 629𝑘𝑔/𝑚3
Step 9. Adjustments for Water.
Subtract the free water on aggregates from the total water weight.

∑ = 190𝑘𝑔/𝑚3

For Coarse Aggregate:

𝐶𝐴 = 1140(0.015 − 0.004)
𝐶𝐴 = 12.4𝑘𝑔/𝑚3
For Fine Aggregate:
𝐹𝐴 = 655(0.04 − 0.008)
𝐹𝐴 = 20.96𝑘𝑔/𝑚3
Adjustment:
𝐴𝑑𝑗𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 = 190 − 33.36
𝐴𝑑𝑗𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 = 157𝑘𝑔/𝑚3
