A 12 kg block is at rest on a inclined plane. The plane is tilted until the block
just begins to slide at angle of inclination of 250.

2.1 Define the term static friction. (2)

2.2 Calculate the maximum static friction between the block and the
inclined plane. (3)

2.3 It is found that when the angle that the plane makes with horizontal is
increased to 360, the box of accelerates uniformly at 4,2 m.s-2 down
the incline.

2.3.1 Draw a free body diagram showing all the forces acting on the
block as it slides down the incline. (3)

2.3.2 State Newton's second law of motion in words. (2)

2.3.3 Calculate the magnitude of the net force acting on the box as it

A 5 kg block, on a rough horizontal surface, is connected by a light inextensible string
passing over a light frictionless pulley to a second block X, of an unknown mass
hanging vertically. The effects of air friction are ignored.

A constant force F, acting at 20° to the horizontal is applied to the 5 kg block as shown
in the diagram below. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the 5 kg block and the
surface is 0,2. The 5 kg moves to the left at CONSTANT VELOCITY to the left.

3.1 Calculate the magnitude of the:


3.1.1 Vertical component of F if the magnitude of the horizontal component
of F equals 38 N. (2)

A spacecraft on a mission to explore the outer solar system was between Jupiter and
Saturn at the distances shown on the diagram.

The mass of Jupiter is 1,9 × 1027 kg and the mass of Saturn is 5,7 × 1026 kg.

4.1 State Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation. (2)

The mass of the spacecraft is 2,2 × 103 kg.

4.2 Calculate the magnitude of the force that Jupiter exerts on the spacecraft

QUESTION 5
A very small, neutral graphite-coated sphere P is rubbed with a cloth. It is found that the
sphere acquires a charge of + 0,5 µC.

5.1 Calculate the number of electrons removed from sphere P during the
charging process. (3)

Now the charged sphere P is suspended from a light, inextensible string.


Another sphere, R, with a charge of – 0,9 µC, on an insulated stand, is brought
close to sphere P. As a result, sphere P moves to a position where it is 20 cm
from sphere R, as shown below. The system is in equilibrium and the angle
between the string and the vertical is 7°.

5.2 Draw a labelled free-body diagram showing all the forces acting on sphere P. (3)

Question 8

Two good Physics students carry out an investigation to determine the relationship
between one of the factors affecting the magnitude of induced emf according using
the setup below.

They drop a magnet from a height of 1m above coil and allow the magnet to fall through
the coil with 200 loops. They repeat the above experiment using the same magnet and
coils with a larger number of loops. They obtained the results graphed below.

8.1 State a hypothesis for the experiment. (2)


8.2 Name ONE variable, that must be kept constant during the experiment to
ensure a fair test. (1)

8.5 In another experiment, a 200-turn circular coil is placed in a magnetic field


such that the field is always perpendicular to the surface of each loop of the
coil. As the coil rotates, the magnetic field changes at a constant rate from
