What is a Business?
A Business is a formal organization that produce products/provide services for a profit.

Four (4) Major functions of a Business

Five (5) Basic entities in a business:


• Suppliers,
• Customers,
• Employees,
• Products & Services, and
• Invoices & Payments

How do you want your employees to perform the functions. --> Business Process

Business Process: The actual steps and tasks (activities) that describe how work is organized in a
business

Every business can be seen as a collection of business processes.

How does information technology enhance Business processes?

How to coordinate and control the four major functions?


Different Types of Information Systems

• Transaction Processing System (TPS),


• Management Information System (MIS),
Systems for Business Intelligence help to make more informed decisions.
• Decision Support System (DSS) &
• Executive Support System (ESS).

Enterprise Application = system that span functional areas, focus on executing business processes across
the business firm, and include all levels of management.

Four (4) major Enterprise Applications:

• Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) (Enterprise Systems)

• Supply Chain Management System (SCM)

• Customer Relationship Management System (CRM)

• Knowledge Management System (KM)

ERP is an enterprise wide application, consisting of different modules covering all business processes,
using a central database.
Internet, Intranet & Extranet
All use internet technology (TCP/IP, HTML, browser, webpages, ip-address, etc)
Internet is public. Accessible for everyone
Intranet & Extranet are private. Needs user-id and password.

E-Business, E-Commerce & E-Government


E-Business: The use of digital technology and the Internet to execute the major business processes in
the enterprise.
E-Commerce: is the part of e-business that deals with buying and selling goods and services over the
Internet. (physical goods and digital goods). It also includes activities supporting those marketing
transactions such as advertising, marketing, customer support, delivery, payment and security)
E-Government: the use of Internet and networking technologies to enable government and public
sector agencies' relationships with citizens, businesses and others government organizations digitally.

Collaboration & Social Business


Collaboration: working with others to achieve shared and explicit goals.
Why is collaboration important nowadays? see page 58.
Social Business: the use of social networking platforms (like Facebook, Twitter, etc) to engage their
employees, customers, and suppliers
Keyword in Social business is Conversation.

The role of Information Systems function in a business.


Business needs information systems to operate, information system department is responsible for IT
services.

Officer & Chief Data Officer
