COMPOSITION
Each single dose syringe of 19g contains
500 mg cephapirin (as benzathine)
INDICATION(S)
Metricef is indicated for the treatment of subacute and chronic endometritis in cows (at
least 14 days after parturition) caused by bacteria sensitive to cephapirin.
Metricef can be used to treat repeat breeder cases (more than three unsuccessful
inseminations), if bacterial infections are suspected to be the cause of the fertility
problem.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Not to be administered to animals which are known to be hypersensitive to
cephalosporin antibiotics and other β-lactam antibiotics.
TARGET SPECIES
Cows
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
The contents of one Metricef syringe should be introduced into the lumen of the uterus
using the disposable catheter provided as follows:
1. Shake the syringe before use.
2. Fix the syringe to the catheter.
3. Hold the cervix of the uterus with one gloved hand introduced into the rectum.
4. Introduce the catheter through the cervix into the lumen of the uterus by gentle
oscillating movements of the cervix.
5. Inject Metricef.
Depending on the response, a second treatment 7-14 days later may be required in
some cases if clinical signs persist.
In animals that have been inseminated, Metricef may be used at one day after
insemination. In case of pyometra, pretreatment with prostaglandin is recommended in
order to induce luteolysis and remove debris from the uterine cavity.
ADVICE ON CORRECT ADMINISTRATION
Shake the syringe before use.
WITHDRAWAL PERIOD
Meat and offal : 24 hours
Milk : 0 hours
SHELF LIFE: 36 months
SPECIAL STORAGE PRECAUTIONS
Store below 25°C.

Keep out of the reach and sight of children.
ADVERSE REACTIONS
Allergic reactions have been observed in very rare cases.
SPECIAL WARNING(S)
Special precautions for use in animals
Use of the product should be based on susceptibility testing of the bacteria isolated from
the animal. If this is not possible, therapy should be based on local (regional, farm level)
epidemiological information about susceptibility of the target bacteria.
Special precautions to be taken by the person administering the
veterinary medicinal product to animals
Penicillins and cephalosporins may cause hypersensitivity (allergy) following injection,
inhalation, ingestion or skin contact. Hypersensitivity to penicillins may lead to cross
sensitivity to cephalosporin and vice versa. Allergic reactions to these substances may
occasionally be serious.

and obtain medical attention.
Accidental spillage on the skin should be washed off immediately with soap and water.
If you develop symptoms following exposure, such as skin rash, you should seek medical
advice and show the physician this warning. Swelling of the face, lips and eyes or
difficulty in breathing are more serious symptoms and require urgent medical attention.
Use during pregnancy and lactation
Metricef is not intended to be used in pregnant animals.
Metricef can be used during lactation.
Interaction with other medicinal products and other forms of interaction
Not to be administered concurrently with other intra-uterine antibiotic preparations.
Overdose (symptoms, emergency procedures, antidotes), if necessary
During a safety study in post-partum cows, Metricef administered up to 5 times the
recommended dosage during 3 consecutive days was well tolerated.
Incompatibilities
None known.
OTHER INFORMATION
Cephapirin, a first generation cephalosporin, is a broad spectrum antibiotic with
bactericidal action against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Cephapirin is
resistant to the action of penicillinase.
After intra-uterine treatment systemic absorption is low, which is reflected by the low
plasma levels of cephapirin observed shortly after treatment. Twelve hours after
treatment, cephapirin levels in plasma are below detectable levels.
After intra-uterine administration of Metricef, high cephapirin concentrations are
observed in endometrium. Endometrium concentrations can be observed up to 24 hours.
PRESENTATION
