Introduction
A good learning and teaching in a class can be
achieved by paying attention to what the
student needs. A student’s need analysis is
needed to improve learning and teaching in a
class. This will help student and teacher to have
a good learning and teaching.
“Education is the most powerful
weapon you can use to change the
world.”

-John Wooden-
Definition of Need Analysis

Need analysis is very important for the

teachers who will design syllabus and
materials for teaching in order to reach the
goal of learning well (Saragih, et al, 2020).

According to Brown (1995), need analysis is

the systematic collection and analysis of all
information necessary for defining and
validating a defensible curriculum
Analysis of Target Needs

● Necessities

● Lacks

● Wants
Analysis of Learning Needs
How are we going from our starting point of
learning to the destination? This indicates another
kind of need: learning needs. The target situation
analysis can determine the destination; it can also
act as a compass on the journey to give general
direction, but we must choose our route according
to the vehicle and guides available (the condition
of learning situation, the existing roads within the
learners’ mind, their knowledge, skill and
strategies ) and the learners’ motivation for
traveling ( Hutchinson and Waters, 2010 ).
Discvovering Target Needs

There are some ways in which information about target

needs can be discovered. Among others there are:
● questionnaires
● interviews
● observations
● data collections
● informal consultations
● assignments
● tests
Questions about Needs Analysis

● What will the course be used for?

● Why are the students taking the course?
● Where will the language be used?
● Who are the students?
● What do they know already about English?
● What are their learning and socio-cultural backgrounds?
● What is their attitude to English and to English culture?
● What resources/material are available?
● What is their concept of teaching and learning?
● What learning methodology will appeal to the students?
Other Factors that Should be Considered

● Who teaches? The teacher

● Whom do teachers teach? The students /
Learners
● What do teachers teach? Knowledge, Skills,
Values
● How do teachers teach? Approach, Method, and
Technique/ Strategies
● How much of the teaching is learned? Shown By
Performance
● With whom do we teach? Other teachers/
partners
Conclusion
Need analysis is a complex process that should be
done by a professional teacher before designing the
program to achieve the goals of learning by
considering some aspects. Needs analysis makes
sure that a course meets the students’ needs, is
relevant, and satisfies them. Needs analysis
discovers students’ needs by considering their
necessities, lacks and wants. Needs analysis also
considers the materials to be delivered and how they
to be delivered to satisfy the students and to reach
the goals of learning beneficially.
Every student can learn,
not just in the same day,
or the same way.
