A. PRONUNCIATION

1. Watch the video about /e/ and /æ/ and practice. Record yourself speaking all the
words in the videos.
2. Listen to the first two minimal pair sentences again and look at the circles on the
left. The big circles are the strongly stressed syllables, and the small circles are the
weakly stressed syllables. (Track 1)

Hi. I’m Nuisa. I’m in New York. I’m from England, but I’m here to learn about the life of a tour

in Brooklyn. He usually gets up at 8 o’clock. Peter has a big breakfast. He usually has fruit and
cereal, and sometimes he has an omelette. He leaves the house at 9 o’clock. Peter works

There are nearly 170,000 police officers in the United Kingdom. They work for 52

force in London. There are over 41,000 police officers in London. Most British police forces
are more than 150 years old. People sometimes call British policemen Bobbies, after Sir
Robert Peel, the man who started the Metropolitan Police. Bobby is short for Robert.
Marcus Gerber is a police officer at Saint Aldates police station in Oxford. He works for
Thames Valley Police. It is a small police force. It only has seven and a half thousand
police officers. Marcus usually works (2) _________ the day, but sometimes he works at
night. He often works at the (3) _________ too. On a day shift, He starts work at 8 o’clock
