RELATIVE CLAUSES

The following relative pronouns are used in defining relative clauses:

Person Thing Place Time Reason


Subject who/that which/that
Object who/whom/that/ø which/that/ø where when why
Possessive whose whose

In non-defining relative clauses we can´t use “that” and we can´t omit the relative
pronoun either.

1.- JOIN THESE SENTENCES USING RELATIVE PRONOUNS BEGINNING WITH THE
WORDS GIVEN. OMIT THE PRONOUN IF POSSIBLE. ADD COMMAS IF NECESSARY.

1. My school is very big. It is in Madrid.


2. Robert Pattinson is an actor. He plays Edward Cullen in the Twilight saga.
3. Madrid is a beautiful city. John was born there
4. The cake tastes delicious. I bought this cake yesterday.
5. Michael is a policeman. His father is a judge.
6. The computer doesn’t work properly. I bought it last month..
7. Prince Charles will be the king of England one day. His mother is Queen Elizabeth.
8. The dog is very friendly. I was given a dog.
9. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was written by Mark Twain. I enjoyed it a lot.
10. Mrs Kelly is the woman. She took me to hospital when I fainted at school.
11. The girl is my sister. I'm talking to the girl.
12. This is the chair. The carpenter repaired it last week.
13. She is married to a man. He is richer than her.
14. She is the friend. She helped me with my homework.
15. That is the swimming-pool. I used to go swimming there.
16. That is the man. His wife is a famous actress.
17. A doctor examined me last Friday. He was really kind.
18. The woman called the police. Her car had been stolen.
19. The restaurant was very expensive. I went to a restaurant last week.
20. The film was very interesting. I saw a film last night.

2.- Join the sentences by means of a relative pronoun or adverb.

e.g. I know a bakery. It sells delicious biscuits and cakes.


I know a bakery which sells delicious biscuits and cakes.

1. Here are the apples. I picked them this morning.


2. That’s the old man. He sells vegetables in the local market.
3. The girl is a great singer. Her boyfriend works in a bar.
4. Hamburg is a German city. Hamburgers were invented there.
5. My parents always go to restaurants late in the evening. They are quieter at this time.
6. This is the girl. She speaks English fluently.
7. This is the bill. I have to pay it.

8. This is the novel. It is very interesting.
9. That is the boy. I met him in the supermarket.
10. This is the school. It is in front of my house.

3.- Join the sentences given with a relative pronoun:


1. The girl studies Chemistry. You met her last week.
2. Sam is our cousin. He came home last night.
3. The hotel is wonderful. We stayed there last summer.
4. That´s the month. We met then.
5. The boy works for my father. Paula is dancing with him.
6. Sara is very happy. Her parents won a medal yesterday.
7. The lady is our sales director. She has just turned round.
8. These pills are for drug addicts. They want to come off drugs.
9. The car is mine. Its bodywork is in a bad state.
10. She showed me something. She got it from an antique shop.
11. The stain won’t come out. You have this stain on your jacket.
12. The uncle is very old-fashioned. He came home last night.
13. The ship was travelling north. They were on the ship.
14. The buttons are too small. You bought them yesterday.
15. The pullover is the very latest. He has the pullover on.
16. I cut the branch. I stumbled on this branch.
17. The children are very naughty. Their mother teaches history at the local school.
18. The old man has a terrible cold. He came into the inn wet to the skin.
19. The mussels were delicious. You cooked them last week.
20. The jersey was naff. Her mother had knitted it for her.
21. They are going to pull down the house. Its roof is black.
22. I saw an indigent. His hand was badly burnt.
23. The inn had central heating. We stayed at that inn.
24. This is the horse. Mary rides it.
25. The boy is very polite. She’s going out with him tonight.
26. The man is forty years of age. He runs this company.
27. The lawyer has one foot in the grave. He worked for my father twenty years ago.
28. We are going through a crisis. In this crisis, many employers will have to close down.
29. They married her daughter to a man. He was twice her age and very wealthy.
30. The man was an old crock. They married her daughter to him.
31. The woman is an ardent feminist. Her husband is a member of the golf club.
32. My grandmother is very old. She suffers from senile dementia.
33. Her sister always gets out of bed on the wrong side. He’s very fond of her.
34. Margaret was madly in love with him. She did not want to tell the truth.
35. Susie is a friend of my daughter’s. She’s swinging on the old rope.
36. The people next door very often go to posh restaurants. They come from well-to-do families.
37. Miss Perkins is very pessimistic about her future. You teach her biology.
38. New York is very cosmopolitan. She would like to live in that city.
39. I saw several paintings and sculptures by Michelangelo Buanarroti. All of them were superb.
40. There were nearly fifty people at the party. The majority of them were wearing informal clothes.
41. He collects cuckoo clocks. Some of them cost him a fortune.
42. He borrowed a lot of books from the library. A few of them were on medieval history.
43. This library loans art books. Most of them are about the Middle Age.
