Aleatoric music (also aleatory music or chance music; from the Latin word
alea, meaning "dice") is music in which some element of the composition is left
to chance, and/or some primary element of a composed work's realization is left to the
determination of its performer(s).

What is Chance music?

Chance also known as Aleatoric music (originates from the Latin word alea which mean
“dice”) is music wherein the composition or method of performance is determined by elements
of chance or unpredictability. Composers of chance music choose pitches, tone colors, and
rhythms through random methods such as throwing coins or dice.
It is interesting because performers are given certain amounts of freedom with regard
to the sequencing and repetition of particular parts throughout a piece of music.

Compositions that could be considered a precedent for chance or aleatory composition

dates back to Johannes Ockeghem’s Missa Cuiusvis Toni and Musikalisches Wurfelspiel or

musical dice game. It was popular in the late 18th and early 19th century and was attributed to
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. These games consisted of a sequence of musical measures for
which each measure had several possible versions and the procedure for selecting the precise
sequence is based on throwing of the dice.

John Cage

Born: September 5, 1912

Died: August 12, 1992
John Milton Cage was the most famous and influential creator of chance music. He was
an American avant-garde composer whose inventive compositions and unorthodox ideas
profoundly influenced mid-20th century music.
Cage pursued both formal and informal musical studies that ranged from classes at
Pomona College to cultural excursions throughout Europe to lessons with American composer
Adolph Weiss. His true mentors were Henry Cowell and Arnold Schoenberg.
Musical Style
He experimented on unorthodox instruments such as the “prepared piano”, tape
recorders, record players, and radios.
He explored electric and electronic sound sources using oscillators, turntables, and
amplification. He also pioneered the use of graphic notation and exhausted the musical
parameters.
He also relied on the I Ching (Book of Changes), an ancient Chinese method of throwing
coins or marked sticks for chance numbers, from which he derived system of charts and graphs
governing the series of events that could happen within the pieces he wrote.

Musical Works
1. Greek Ode (voice and piano)
2. Three Easy Pieces (piano)
3. A Chant with Claps (voice)
4. Triple-paced No. 2 (prepared piano)
5. Prelude for Six Instruments in A Minor (flute, bassoon, trumpet)
6. Black Mountain Piece (multi-media event)
7. 4’33’’
