HAAR AUSTRALIA FPO PUMP INSTALLATION QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE

Thank you for buying an Alfons Haar pump. This quick reference guide highlights a few important points
when installing the pump to ensure that it will operate correctly and avoid premature failure.

Note: all of the below points are included in the Operation Instruction manual for this pump. If you don’t
have a copy of this manual, please contact us and we’ll get you one right away.

LOCATING AND MOUNTING THE PUMP:

 The pump must be installed with the rotor shaft parallel to the ground (deviations up to 5 degrees
acceptable). Vertical installation will cause premature failure of the rotor bearings.

\\

 
Regardless of orientation, the grease nipples on each end plate must face upward. If need be, rotate end

plates by removing the six hex-head bolts and then carefully spin each end plate to the correct position. Be
careful not to dislodge the end plate inner o-ring when doing this.

 Additionally, make sure these rotor bearing grease nipples are accessible for servicing. If this is
impractical, contact us to order grease line extensions for your pump. The recommended greasing
maintenance period is every 600 hours of operation, or annually, or more frequently whenever greasing
other items on the truck (where vehicle mounted). Apply grease with the pump running.
 When locating the pump, it is preferable to have a ‘pump width’ of space allowed for the removable and
servicing of the end plates and rotor (without removing the whole pump).
 The pump must be supported with brackets or vibration mounts via the tapped-hole mounting points in the
outer body. Please do not mount the pump via pipe-flanges only. For off-road and rough-road vehicle use,
the pump must be supported from below with a cradle bracket.
 Ensure that pipework connecting to the pump is supported so as to not translate any undue mechanical
stress to the pump. Where vehicle mounted, ensure the pump and pipes are supported separately, but
from the same ridged structure. A significant mismatch in movement between the piping and pump may
damage the suction/discharge flange.

 Make sure the pump suction/discharge flange is parallel and flat to the piping flanges prior to final fitment.
Please avoid the use of excess torque on the flange bolts to resolve misalignment as this is likely to break
a flange.
 The pumps suction/discharge flanges seal on the supplied o-rings. Please avoid the use of liquid/paste
sealants and/or any other gaskets. A proper flange seal is achieved when the flanges are metal on metal,
without any clearance between.

TIPS FOR BEST PERORMANCE:

 If the system design is such that the pump may run dry for any length of time, we strongly recommend the
use off a temperature shut-off switch. Please contact us for more information on this.
 Make sure the pump used is suitable for the working fluid. Alfons Haar pumps are suitable as standard for
road vehicle and aircraft hydrocarbon fuels. Please contact us when using Haar pumps for solvent or
higher viscosity oil applications to ensure you receive an appropriate model.
 All Alfons Haar pumps have a maximum rotation speed. Please check the Operation Instruction manual for
this maximum RPM.
 All FPO pumps have gauge ports to measure the suction and discharge pressure when operating (see
diagram). Attaching gauges to these points can be really helpful for diagnosing any suction or discharge
problems system when commissioning your fuel system.

 For pumps with a pneumatic bypass, make sure to remove the grey plugs and install a 0.5m breather line
on any unused ports to prevent a vacuum build up.
 For shaft drive models (PTO, electric motor), make sure that the drive and rotor shafts are parallel to avoid
any adverse vibration occurring in either piece of equipment.

 Regardless of installation type, always install an in-line strainer up-stream of a fuel pump to stop debris
from passing through the vane/rotor chamber. Call us to discuss the range of these we have available if
unsure.
