CHAPTER I
1. Previewing
A. Definition of Previewing
Previewing is pre-reading skill by which the reader tries to gather as much
information about the text as he/she can before reading it. This gathering of information
helps the reader to have a general picture of the text. Previewing is a way to view text
globally. The purpose of previewing is simply to obtain general information about the
content of a text, especially the topic of reading text, previewing before reading the text
makes an important contribution to the process of understanding information quickly.
Previewing is done by looking at the first sentences and the last sentence in each
paragraph. This is because the writing patterns people based English have an inductive
tendency, “straight to the point” in that case, the topic sentence always appears in the first
sentences of each paragraph.
Previewing also gives you the experience that you are can take the essence of
information from a reading text without having the raed word by word. This previewing
activity also provides the ability to be one of the basic assets to improve the level of
reading speed and henceforth used in skimming.
1. Predicting
A. Definition of Predicting
Predicting is ability to predict what will come by using grammatical, logical and
cultural. Instructions. Before reading a book, we usually estimate the contents of the book
from the cover image or from the cover image or from the title and then we read the
abstract contained on the cover of the back of the book.
In addition to guessing the contents of the book, we can also guess the contents of
an article and paragraph. In this discussion in particular we will discuss about estimating
the last sentence of a paragraph. For example, we are currently reading paragraph 1, then
reading paragraphs 2,3, and so on. So before moving on to paragraph 2 we can estimate
the contents of that paragraph from the last sentence of the paragraph that we are reading.
Predicting is an important reading strategy. When making predictions, we
envision what will come next in the text, based on their prior knowledge. Making
predictions encourages readers to use crtical thinking and problem solving skills. Readers
are given the opportunity to reflect and evaluate the text, this extracting deeper meaning
and comprehension skills. Students will also be more interested in the raeding material
when they connect their knowledge with the new information that is being learned.
B. How to Predict
Review the front and back of a book, the table of contents, the chapter names,
subhedaings and diagrams prior to reading.
Make conversations to the text using your prior knowledge.
Create your prediction.
