SECTION A (40 marks)
Answer two (2) questions. Question number One (1) is compulsory.
1. (a) Form six students at Maua seminary conducted a prismatic compass survey around their
school compound and take linear and angular measurements as tabulated in the table below.
Line/Stations Distance (M) Forward Bearing Back Bearing
PQ 200 191000’ 13000’
QR 150 39030’ 222030’
RS 250 22015’ 200015’

2. Carefully study the Map extract of MASWA sheet 49/2 provided and answerthe following
questions.
(a) Calculate the distance of the road in km from grid reference 862486 to grid reference
867620.
(b) Describe three (3) possible geomorphic processes that might have molded the landforms in
the area.
(c) Outline three (3) functions and two (2) patterns of the settlements on the mapped area.
(d) A bus travelled for a speed of 70 km/hrs covered a distance of between point X to Y in 30
minutes. Assuming the distance measured on map is 7 cm. Construct a linear scale to
measure 60 km.
(e) Describe any four (4) factors that are likely to affect the composition of the mapped area.
3. (a) Construct a proportional divided semi-circle to show gypsum production and export in 000
tonnes in Tanzania from 2013 to 2016.
(b) State two (2) advantages and disadvantages of the method used to present the data.
4. Air masses only develop over an area which is extensive and which is uniform in size and shape,
for example a desert surface or an ocean surface. Explain four (4) general characteristics and
suggest any four (4) principal types of air masses.
5. There are many erosive and depositional features in the alpine glaciation, some of which are
important to man. Justify the statement by giving eight (8) points.
6. The concept of plate tectonic theory was brought on the late of 1960’s in attempting to address
weakness of two preexisting theories of continental drift and sea floor spreading. You as
geographer, tell your society the causes of plate movement by giving five (5) points and show
three applications of the mentioned theory.
7. The ability of the soil to produce high or low yields depends on a number of factors such as
relief, climate and farming techniques as to mention a few. Basing on this statement; elaborate
eight (8) properties of fertile soil
