STATICS OF RIGID BODY (ESM 2040) ENGR. RAMON III GREGORIO RECTANGULAR COMPONENTS OF A FORCE
FORCE IN TERMS OF UNIT VECTORS
Simplify working with rectangular components, we introduce two vectors of unit magnitude, directed respectively along the positive x and y axes. These vectors are called unit vectors and are denoted by i and j, respectively RECTANGULAR COMPONENTS OF A FORCE
The parallelogram drawn to obtain the two components is a rectangle,
and Fx and Fy are called rectangular components.
We can obtain the rectangular components Fx and Fy of a force F by
multiplying respectively the unit vectors i and j by appropriate scalars RECTANGULAR COMPONENTS OF A FORCE EXAMPLE A Force of 800 N is exerted on a bolt A as shown. Determine the horizontal and vertical components of the force. RECTANGULAR COMPONENTS OF A FORCE EXAMPLE A man pulls with a force of 300 N on a rope attached to the top of a building. Determine the horizontal and vertical components of the force. RECTANGULAR COMPONENTS OF A FORCE EXAMPLE A force F = (700 lb)i + (1500 lb)j is applied to a bolt A. Determine the magnitude of the force and the angle θ it forms with the horizontal. ADDITION OF FORCES BY SUMMING X AND Y COMPONENTS Consider, for instance, three forces P, Q, and S acting on a particle A. Their resultant R is defined by the relation ADDITION OF FORCES BY SUMMING X AND Y COMPONENTS EXAMPLE Four forces act on bolt A as shown. Determine the resultant of the forces on the bolt. ADDITION OF FORCES BY SUMMING X AND Y COMPONENTS EXAMPLE ADDITION OF FORCES BY SUMMING X AND Y COMPONENTS EXAMPLE determine (a) the required value of α if the resultant of the three forces shown is to be vertical, (b) the corresponding magnitude of the resultant.
