Statics Project Instructions
Statics Project Instructions
Students are required to design and fabricate their own model bridge.
Objective
Design and fabricate a bridge based on a standard bridge truss configuration using any material
of your choice. Truss configuration will be assigned to the groups. A 2D truss analysis for the
truss configurations must be done, calculating which members would be in tension and which in
compression along with the forces in each member. Based on your analysis you must also guess
what a safe load bearing capacity of your bridge would be.
Conditions
Bridge Material: You can use wood, tree branches, ice cream sticks, bamboo sticks or any other
similar material of your liking, if you can’t find these materials, pencils and even uncooked
spaghetti are possible options.
Binding Material: You can use hot glue (with a glue gun), wood glue, CA glue, cable ties, pins,
or any other suitable material for binding your members.
Bridge Dimensions: The minimum length of the bridge should be 30 cm and the width should
be at least 8 cm.
Missing Data and Information: No additional information will be provided as this is an open-
ended project. If any information/data is missing, you can make appropriate assumptions.
Assumptions should be logical and must be stated in your report.
Project Group: For each group the maximum number of students is six with one group leader.

Deliverables
1. 2D static analysis of your bridge truss along with the expected design value of your
bridge in the form of a report. (By due date)
2. Fabricated Bridge (By due date)
3. A group viva of your project in Week 16.
NOTE: If any group does not submit their report and model, or any student does not give viva
with their group, they will be given ZERO marks for the project.
Suppose you want to analyze the following truss, assuming that a 10N force is acting at joint C.
To calculate the support reactions (assuming that the angle at the center is 100o and the others are
40o, for your truss you will have your own design angles according to the type of your truss)
we get the support reactions at A and B as 5N each in the y-direction. Now using method of joint
AC will come out to be 7.78 N (C) and AB as 5.96 N (T) and finally BC will also be 7.78 N (C).
This is the analysis which you have to perform for your truss. Since the space truss for your
project will be symmetric so you only have to analyze one side treating it as a plane truss. NO
analysis required for the top truss of the bridge.
These are just guidelines you can follow any other method you find convenient.
