1 Introduction
1.1 Scope
This document describes the GSM and UMTS dynamic power sharing feature (corresponding to feature
MRFD-211801 GSM and UMTS Dynamic Power Sharing(GSM), or MRFD-221801 GSM and UMTS
Dynamic Power Sharing(UMTS)) supported by the GSM and UMTS (GU) multi-mode base station
(MBTS). This feature is applicable to the scenario where the GSM carrier and UMTS carrier use the
same power amplifier (PA). When this feature is enabled, the HSDPA cell can share the carrier power
provided by the GSM BTS. In the case of GSM traffic burst, the GSM BTS can retrieve the carrier power
shared by the UMTS cell.
In this document, the GSM BTS refers to the MBTS performing the functions of a GSM base station, the UMTS NodeB
refers to the MBTS performing the functions of a UMTS base station.

2 Technical Description
When the GSM carrier and UMTS carrier of a GU MBTS use the same PA, the HSDPA cell can share
the idle power of the GSM carrier through this feature. This helps improve the power usage efficiency
and the quality of the GSM network and UMTS network when busy hours of these two networks fall in
different periods of a day or the traffic of these two networks is not evenly distributed. In the case of GSM
traffic burst, the GSM BTS can retrieve the power shared by the UMTS cell.
The time of each day when GU power sharing is enabled is set through the MML command SET BTSGUPWRSHRFP.
1. When the parameter GUPWRSHARESWITCH is set to YES, the GSM BTS determines whether power
sharing is allowed. If yes, the procedure proceeds to 2. Otherwise, the procedure ends.
Power sharing is allowed when the following conditions are met:
− The GSM carrier and UMTS carrier use the same PA.
− The number of GSM non-BCCH carriers >= GUPWRSHARETRXNUM.
− The UMTS carrier is the HSDPA carrier.
2. The power sharing period of 4.8 seconds starts.
3. The GSM BTS determines whether the carrier power in the current power sharing period meets the
requirements for power sharing. If yes, the procedure proceeds to 4. Otherwise, the GSM BTS
performs the actions described in Table 2-1.
The requirements for power sharing are as follows:
− The load of the GSM carrier power in the current power sharing period (GSMCurPowLoad) < GSM
Power Load Threshold for GU Power Sharing (GUPWRSHAREPWRLOAD).
− The remaining power of the GSM carrier in the current power sharing period is sufficient to support
power sharing.

shared power.

sharing,
The GSM carrier did not provide power for the UMTS Power retrieval need not be performed. In such a
cell to share in the previous period, case, the GSM BTS waits for the next power
sharing period to start.
4. The GSM BTS notifies the UMTS cell of the power that will be shared in the current period.
Meanwhile, the GSM BTS updates the total available carrier power.
The increased GSM carrier power for sharing in each power sharing period must not exceed
GUPWRSHAREURCVPWRPD, and the accumulated power of the GSM carrier that can be shared by the UMTS cell
must not exceed GUPWRSHAREURCVPWR.
5. The UMTS NodeB determines whether to accept the carrier power provided by the GSM BTS. If yes,
the procedure proceeds to 6. Otherwise, the GSM BTS updates the total available carrier power.
6. The UMTS NodeB updates the maximum transmit power of the UMTS cell that shares the GSM
carrier power. This finalizes the procedure of GU power sharing.
After the HSDPA cell shares the carrier power provided by the GSM BTS, the transmit power on the
HSDPA channel increases. The increased power leads to deterioration of signal quality of the Common
Pilot Channel (CPICH) of UEs at the edge of the UMTS cell. This further causes the coverage of the UMTS
cell to shrink. In such a case, blind areas may occur, and the call drop rate of UEs at the edge of cell may
rise. To solve this problem, it is recommended that the UEs served by the UMTS cell be handed over to
the inter-frequency UMTS cells or neighboring GSM cells through parameter setting. To ensure that
there is sufficient time for the inter-frequency or inter-RAT handovers, the per-period increment of the
UMTS maximum transmit power needs to be set to a proper value through the parameter
GUPWRSHAREURCVPWRPD, so that the signal quality of the CPICH will deteriorate gradually instead of
sharply.
In the case of GSM traffic burst, the GSM BTS retrieves the power shared by the UMTS cell during the
power sharing period, as shown in Figure 2-3.
1. In the case of the UMTS cell sharing power with the GSM BTS, the GSM BTS determines whether to
retrieve the shared power before the signals are transmitted over the timeslot. If yes, the procedure
proceeds to 2. Otherwise, the procedure of power sharing proceeds as normal.
2. The GSM BTS notifies the UMTS NodeB of the power that will be retrieved.
3. The GSM BTS receives a message from the UMTS NodeB indicating that the UMTS cell agrees to
return the power.
4. The GSM BTS updates the accumulated carrier power that can be shared in the current power
sharing period. The UMTS NodeB updates the maximum transmit power of the UMTS cell that
shares the GSM carrier power.
5. The UMTS NodeB notifies the GSM BTS that the power is successfully returned.
6. The GSM BTS updates the total available carrier power.
7. The next power sharing period of 4.8 seconds starts.
3 Parameters

Parameter ID NE MML Description
GUPWRSHARESWITCH BSC6900 SET Meaning: GU dynamic power
BTSRXUBP(Optional) sharing enables the power sharing
between GSM and UMTS networks
when the traffic of the two networks
are not in balance. In this manner,
the power usage and the network
quality are improved. This
parameter specifies whether to
enable the GU dynamic power
sharing.
