PART 1: READING SKILLS

Read the interview. Then use the information to complete the activities that follow.

Learners Weigh Online Option

1 Do you think online classes are better than traditional face-to-face classrooms?
If so, you’re not alone. The overall enrollment rate for online classes is soaring.
While some students never fully adjust to this new way of learning, others swear
by it.1
2 Many students who learn via the Internet enjoy the convenience. Diana Morgan’s
story is quite typical. Ms. Morgan explains, “A specific situation made it crucial
for me to participate in online courses. I was working in the medical sector
of Chicago and caring for my children. I wanted to become a nurse, but I was
disappointed to find that I had no time to attend classes. Learning online let me
take a beginning nursing class from home. I liked it so much that I signed up for
subsequent ones, and I’m looking forward to those with great anticipation!”
3 Others approach online learning with more doubt, but even among those, many
are soon converted. After completing an online marketing class, Julia Jackson
said, “At first, I felt that studying online might be an issue for me because I enjoy
the interaction in a traditional classroom. However, I found the diversity of
the group and the collaboration between students to be wonderful. It’s a global
classroom, and this just enhances the education for me as a business major.”
4 Aspects of online learning turn out to be positive for some students and negative
for others. Raymond Zamora says he doesn’t like to be with other people. He
is a big fan of science fiction—the subject of his first online course. “Being
physically separated let me analyze the material without being interrupted. What
a great experience!” By comparison, Alicia Branson had a significantly different
feeling about it. “Without face-to-face interaction with my instructor, I felt
less motivated. I also felt that I had to make more assumptions about what the
instructor wanted because I couldn’t talk to her one-on-one.”
5 One drawback of virtual learning is that fewer students who enroll complete
their courses compared to those in traditional classroom courses. Educational
researchers dispute the reasons behind the pattern. Registration for courses is so
easy that it may attract learners who are less serious.
6 Knowing if online learning would suit you may ultimately depend on your
learning style. However, until you try it, you can’t be sure!
