sustainable materials in cafes. In this study, is to find out the level of visitor awareness
about sustainability, types of sustainable materials in cafe and the most sustainable
interior materials finishes that most preferred by visitors. This study will be
conducted using a quantitative approach. There will be a survey conducted on visitors
who have visited cafes around Selangor, Malaysia. These surveys ask the same
questions to a large number of people or utilise a Likert scale, ranking question to
quantify opinions as numerical data. In order to obtain high well-being, we must

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Introduction

Climate change and global warming are becoming increasingly unstable,

which is -endangering the Earth. Excessive human consumption ofenvironmentally
friendly or non -environmentally friendly commodities causes this problem, referred
to as global warming (Hamdan, D. 2018). So, at the global level, there are a number
of steps that can be taken to prevent the world from continuing to be affected by
environmental pollution, climate uncertainty, and global warming, namely
sustainability efforts.

Sustainable Design is a holistic approach to design that considers energy

efficiency in areas such as materials and furniture that make up space, lighting, and
ventilation. Sustainability can be implemented in a variety of ways, including the
selection of materials for use in indoor spaces (Kim, W. & Dodi, 2013). As a result,
the application of the concept of sustainability must be widely disseminated, so that
the public can begin learning and pleasant impressions on a global scale, resulting
in a better quality of life.

Malaysia is also involved in agreements and actions to save the earth fromthe
threat of environmental destruction (Hamdan, D. 2018). Therefore, the Sustainable
Design Concept is adopted in cafes in Malaysia, as evidenced by the design and
materials used from bamboo, stone, copper, glass, and fabric. For example,
Merchant's Lane Café on Petaling Street which uses wooden furniture and floors
and uses concrete walls.
