Timetable slot:4 lecture periods (Monday 10h30, Tuesday 8h00, Tuesday 9h00, and
Wednesday 10h30); Venue M110, DM119/121; Practical: Wednesday 10h30.
Consultation hours: Monday 08h00-10h00, DO209,(All other consultation outside this
hours must be duly booked through emails (NOT WhatsApp) at least 48 hours before the
time.

All lecture notes, other learning materials as well as practical manual / Schedule are
available via the UNAM portal and Moodle. Please check the portal and Moodle regularly
for soft copies of relevant information, including the course information sheet/course
outline etc.

COURSE ASSESSMENT:
1. Continuous assessment (50%)

[NB: all tests and practicals count towards CA and there are no retests]
2. Examination (50%) [1 x 3h examination paper]

IMPORTANT DATES
o Test 1: 27th March, 2024 at 10h30 in the classroom or any other venue that will be
announced later.
o Test 2: 20th May, 2024 at 8h00 in the classroom or any other venue that will be announced
later.

PRACTICALS

One practical session per week on Wednesday 10h30 CE019, Electronics laboratory, Ground
floor, India wing.

Additional Information

Practical manual and report template with necessary precaution and instructions is posted on the
portal and distributed electronically.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: (Summary)


Semiconductor theory. Diodes: construction, diode applications (including power supplies).
Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJTs): structure, operation, biasing and ac modelling. Field Effect
Transistors (FET): structure, operation, biasing and introduction to amplification and switching.
OP-Amps: internal structure, ideal and practical op-amps, specifications, and basic applications.
Analysis of electronic circuits.).

LEARNING OUTCOMES / SPECIFIC OUTCOMES:

On successful completion of the Course, students should be able to:

1. Discuss the atomic structure of semiconductor materials


2. Discuss the construction and operation of semiconductor diodes.
3. Analyse and design diode-based circuits.
4. Discuss the construction of BJT transistors
5. Analyse and design BJT transistor amplifier and switching circuits
6. Discuss the construction of FET transistors
7. Analyse and design FET biasing circuits
8. Discuss the internal circuitry for op-amps
9. Discuss the operation of op-amps
10. Analyse and design basic op-amp circuits

You must attend all classes and practical sessions and be on time.

Rules
1. All UNAM rules and regulations apply. In particular note the following: -
a. Attendance at lectures and practical SESSIONS is COMPULSORY
b. You will not be allowed to sit for exams if you do not attend 80% of lectures and
practical sessions
c. Plagiarism is an academic offense. Read details of this in UNAM regulations.
2. Practical sessions will not be repeated, missed session must be accompanied by a doctor’s
certificate or a death certificate to warrant being excused from that session.
3. Consultations are allowed during consultation hours or by appointment.
4. Notes, the practical manual, and additional reading material will be posted on the Porta,
Moodle or via email or Course WhatsApp group.
5. If you do not understand anything we learn, please point it out during lectures or through
your Course class representative.
6. We encourage active participation during lectures and during practicals.
