Creative Process as a Lesson Planning Tool


Apply what you just learned about the creative process, and the activity and
discussion we just did. Pick a project you’d like your students to create and plan
what the steps in the creative process should look like to get the kids to
successfully create it. This is a formative assessment so this will allow me to see
what we still need to work on. No grades should be given during a formative
assessment.

What is the intended project supposed to look like? (Describe what it is and what kind of art
materials you’d need. What does the final product need to look like?)

Materials needed: Green Paint, black marker, construction paper. Could use sponge brushes or
dabbers as alternate for less mess.

Step 1: Imagine and Generate (What could you show the students to get them thinking about
the artwork? How will you introduce the project? What themes could be discussed?)

I would introduce this art/craft project after reading the very hungry caterpillar to the students.
I would do this as a spring project. A theme that could be introduced is metamorphosis.
Step 2: Plan, Prepare, Explore, and Focus (What exercises, techniques, or mediums could you
have the students practice with to get them ready for the project? Are you assigning any
planning time for sketching? If so what/how many?)

I would have the students warm up by practicing using their fingers to paint a picture of their
choice (sponge brushes, or dabbers also work). I would allow them to think about how long
they want their caterpillar to be.

Step 3: Develop and Make (What are you demonstrating, how long will the students have to
work on the piece, how might you guide them through the completion of the piece? What
other assistance might they need?)

The first thing I would do is show the students of what we sort of want to base our picture on
and that is the very hungry caterpillar. I would then summarize the steps by saying we will
begin by picking out a piece of paper that we wish our background to be. Then I would explain
how we want to paint the body of the caterpillar before we put eyes and legs on it. After
explaining to students the overall picture, I would go step by step with them modeling it and
then having them do it.

Step 4: Evaluate and Present (How do you intend to evaluate the work? How do you intend to
exhibit the work? How will student know when they are done? What criteria will it need to
have?)

I would exhibit the work by putting it on a bulletin board. I would evaluate the students as they
work and how well they use the time allotted. Students will know they are done when they
have a caterpillar with legs and a face and they put their name on the back of their paper and
turn it in.

Step 5: Reflect (What kinds of questions could you ask the students for them to reflect on what
they’ve learned? Will this be done in a large group, small groups, one-on-one, or as a writing
assignment? Why did you choose this kind of reflective activity?)

I would ask students what their project would look like after a few weeks if we had a real
caterpillar in class?? I would have the students think pair share and then ask them to raise their
hand and share with the class. I choose this because I want students to be able to think about
what their artwork represents.
