CHAPTER 1

1. INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Facebook is a social networking service launched in February 2004, owned and operated by Facebook,
Inc. As of September 2012, Facebook has over one billion active users, more than half of them using
Facebook on a mobile device. Users must register before using the site, after which they may create a
personal profile, add other users as friends, and exchange messages, including automatic notifications
when they update their profile. Additionally, users may join common-interest user groups, organized
by workplace, school or college, or other characteristics, and categorize their friends into lists such as
"people from Work" or " Close Friends". Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg with his college
roommates and fellow Harvard University students Eduardo Saverin, Andrew Mccullum, Dustin
Moskovitz and Cris Hughes. The website's membership was initially limited by the founders to
Harvard students, but was expanded to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and
Stanford University. It gradually added support for students at various other universities before
opening to high school students, and eventually to anyone aged 13 and over.In May 2005, Accel
partners invested $12.7 million in Facebook, and Jim Breuer added $1 million of his own money to the
pot.

According to a May 2011 Consumer reports survey, there are 7.5 million children under 13 with
accounts and 5 million under 10, violating the site's terms of service. Facebook is beneficial to one's
social life because they can continuously stay in contact with their friends and relatives, while others
say that it can cause increased antisocial tendencies because people are not directly communicating
with each other. But some argue that Facebook has affected the social life and activity of people in
various ways. With it's availability on many mobile devices, Facebook allows users to continuously
stay in chat with friends, and relatives and other acquaintances wherever they are in the world, as
long as there is access to the internet. It can also unite people with common interests and/or beliefs
through groups and other pages, and has been known to reunite lost family members and friends
because of the widespread reach of it's network. Facebook also continues to prompt debate about
user's behaviors. The effects of online activities on themselves and their interactions with others have
been discussed extensively. In particular, students are a main class of Facebook users who spend long
hours on the social network, which has worried parents and aducational authorities about their
academic performance. The students themselves argue that their presence on Facebook as a leisure
activity, does not hinder their academic efforts, though some evidence suggests that their grades
decline after they join Facebook.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study focused on the perception of Grade 10 students on the effectiveness of Facebook as a
Communication Tool of Matangad National High School enrolled in S.Y. 2023-2024.

Despite the widespread use of Facebook among Grade 10 students, there is a need to understand their
perception of its effectiveness as a communication tool. This study aims to investigate the following
research questions:

1. What are the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:

a. Age

b. Sex

c. Facebook users

Socio-economic status

2.How does the use of Facebook impact the quality and effectiveness of communication among Grade 10
students?

3.How does the perception of Facebook as a communication tool among Grade 10 students relate to their
academic performance and social interactions?
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The significance of the study on the perception of Grade 10 students on the effectiveness ofFacebook as a
communication tool can be manifold:

1. Educational Insights: The study can provide valuable insights to educators and school administrators
about how students are using Facebook for communication. This can help them understand the role of
social media in students' lives and potentially guide the incorporation of social media into educational
strategies.

2. Student Well-being: Understanding how Grade 10 students perceive and use Facebook can shed light on
its impact on their mental and emotional well-being. This can inform interventions or policies aimed at
promoting healthy social media use.

3. Parental Guidance: The findings can help parents understand the influence of Facebook on their
children's communication patterns and social interactions. This can guide them in setting appropriate
boundaries and providing necessary guidance.

4. Policy Making: The study can influence policy-making in schools regarding the use of social media. It can
provide data that can be used to create policies that protect students while also leveraging the benefits of
social media.

5. Academic Performance: The study can explore the correlation between Facebook use and academic
performance, providing insights that can be used to address potential negative impacts.

6. Future Research: This study can serve as a foundation for future research in this field, contributing to a
deeper understanding of the role and impact of social media in education and youth development.

CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

The use of social media platforms such as Facebook has become widespread among Filipinos, including
students. With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing schools to adopt distance learning, the importance of this
platform as educational tool has become more apparent. Several studies have explored the effectiveness
of Facebook communication in the education of students, particularly in the Humanities and Social
Sciences (HUMSS) strand. In a study conducted by Belarmino, Melgar, and Orong (2019), it was found that
Facebook as acommunication tool enhanced the collaborative learning process among HUMSS students.
The study showed that students were able to share their ideas, clarify their understanding, and receive
immediate feedback from their peers and teachers. A study by Salandanan (2017) found that Facebook
groups served as an effective tool for students to access learning resources and participate in discussions
outside the classroom. The study emphasized the need for teachers to create a supportive online learning
environment to enhance student engagement and motivation. In a local Philippine context, several studies
have also explored the use of Facebook in education. In a study conducted by Matias (2018),it was found
that the use of Facebook in the classroom improved student engagement and motivation in learning. The
study showed that students who used Facebook had higher academic achievement than those who did
not. Additionally, a study by De Leon and Cabilao (2019) highlighted the potential of Facebook in
facilitating the development of critical thinking skills among HUMSS students. The study showed that the
use of this platform helped students to analyze information, evaluate arguments, and form opinions
through online discussions. However, it is important to note that the effectiveness of Facebook
communication in education is not without challenges. One study by Garcia (2018) identified several
challenges in using social media platforms as educational tools, such as distractions, privacy concerns, and
issues with internet connectivity. Another study by De Guzman and Ceniza (2019) emphasized the need for
teachers to undergo training and professional development to effectively integrate this tool into the
curriculum. In conclusion, the literature suggests that Facebook communication can be effective tools in
the education of HUMSS students, particularly in enhancing collaboration, communication, engagement,
motivation, andcritical thinking skills. However, the success of this tool largely depends on how they are
integrated into the curriculum and how teachers create a supportive online learning environment for their
students.
