Introduction
The cardiac muscle possesses special properties which include
autorhythmicity, conductivity, excitability and contractility. This is because of
the presence of a specialized pacemaker tissue in the heart that can initiate
repetitive action potentials and normally spreads the impulses
through the heart.

Definition
It refers to the property of the cardiac muscle which enables the heart to
initiate its own impulse at constant rhythmical intervals & conduct the impulse
throughout the heart.

Anatomical Structures of the Heart

The human heart consists of four chambers. They are as follows :-
 Right Atrium
 Left Atrium
 Right Ventricle
 Left Ventricle

Structures involved in Conduction of Electrical impulses:

Nodal Tissues:
 Sino-atrial Node
 Atrio-ventricular Node
Conducting Fibers:
 Internodal Fibers
 Interatrial Fibers
 Bundle of His
 Purkinjee Fiber
Conduction system of the Heart:
 Sinoatrial (SA) node is located in the wall of right atrium, just right to the
opening of superior vena cava.

 Spontaneous rhythmical electrical impulses arise from the SA node and

spread in all directions through:
a. Interatrial fibers to the cardiac muscles of both atria
b. Internodal fibers to AV node.

 The AV node is located on the right lower part of the atrial septum. The
impulse gets delayed in the AV node.

 The delay allows the atria to contract and blood is forced actively into
the ventricles (atrial systole).

 The AV node conduct the cardiac impulse to the Bundle of His.

 The bundle fibers arises from the AV node & descends through the
ventricular septum where it gives off branches; Right Bundle branch and
Left Bundle branch.
 RBB conduct impulse for right ventricle and LBB for left ventricle.

 The branches become continuous with the plexus of Purkinjee Fibers,

which spread out deep into the endocardium and reach all part of the
ventricles.

 When the impulses reach these fibers they trigger the muscle fibers in
the ventricles to contract (Ventricular systole).

Conclusion
In this context, it is understood that the heart conduction system is the
network of nodes, cells and signals that controls the heartbeat. Each time the
heart beats, electrical impulses travel through the heart. These signals cause
different parts of the heart to expand and contract and these expansion and
contraction control blood circulation through the heart and body.
