Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS COPE

Education in the Philippines does not only require academic

excellence but also endurance from all sorts of problems while studying whether

emotional, social and the most common problem, financial. Underprivileged

students need to overcome not only their academic requirements but also to

hurdle the financial aspect which is why many have opted to become working

students.

The practice of working while studying is not new in the Philippines.

Financial constraints often force Filipino students into the workforce. As a result,

the current educational landscape sees a lot of students engaged in part-time or

full-time work alongside their studies – making it difficult for students to juggle all

at once.

According to the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), around

216,000 students in the Philippines work while studying. – that’s 8% of the total

college population. At Christ the King College de Maranding Inc., working

students comprise 31 of the total student population. These young heroes juggle

classes and jobs and balancing academic demands with long hours and

demanding tasks like homework, reviews, and exams.

2

Managing a full-time job and one’s studies at the same time necessitates

careful planning and prioritization. While some students would prefer not to work

while furthering their education, a large number of students work while studying

for a degree.

Working while studying has an advantage and disadvantages specifically

for the students. Working students often times find it difficult to balance personal

life, academics, and work that cause the poor grades for them. Additionally,

teachers encounter difficulties, particularly with those students who are busy and

preoccupied by their work.

Theoretical Framework

The researchers anchored their study on the following theories that

support the idea of life work balance among working students these theories are:

(1) Walberg’s (1981) theory of educational productivity; (2) Watts and Pickering

(2000) Theory; (3) The Zero-Sum Theory by Becker (1965); (4) Spillover Positive

by Zedeck (1992); and (5)Self-Determination Theory by Deci and Ryan; (6)

Human Capital Theory (Becker, 1964)

Kendra Cherry Self-determination theory is a social-psychological

framework that explains how different types of motivation affect our day-to-day

well-being and decisions. Motivation determines human behavior, and some

3

motivations push us to do things (sacrifice sleep to meet an important deadline)

or not (miss a deadline to rest).

Walberg’s (1981) theory of educational productivity was empirically

tested as one of very few theories of academic achievement. Walberg’s theory of

academic achievement posits that psychological characteristics of individual

students and their immediate psychological environments influence educational

outcomes (cognitive, behavioral, and attitudinal) (Reynolds & Walberg, 1992).

Further, Walberg’s research identified nine key variables that influence

educational outcomes as student ability/prior achievement, motivation,

age/developmental level, quantity of instruction, quality of instruction, classroom

climate, home environment, peer group, and exposure to mass media outside of

school (Walberg, Fraser, & Welch, 1986).

Watts and Pickering (2000) Theory suggested that skills learned at the

job are transferable, and students who have a job are more employable due to

their development of organizational and time management skills. Working

students were also said to develop good interpersonal and intrapersonal skills.

The Zero-Sum Theory proposes that student work and education are

alternatives, based on the Theory of the Allocation of Time (Becker, 1965). It is

suggested that student employment severely limits students' use of time: time

spent working crowds out time spent on activities that improve academic success

(e.g., studying, doing homework, and attending classes; Bozick, 2007;

4

Kalenkoski & Pabilonia, 2009; 2012). As a result of the decreased time spent on

the student employment may have a negative impact on educational attainment

(Arulampalam, Naylor, & Smith, 2012; Stinebrickner & Stinebrickner, 2004;

2008). However Spending an hour more on student work does not always imply

spending an hour less on study activities (Triventi, 2014). In other words, student

workers may reduce their hours. On leisure time without sacrificing time spent on

school-related tasks (much). Indeed, Kalenkoski and Pabilonia (2009; 2012),

Schoenhals, Tienda, and others have made similar claims. Schneider (1998) and

Warren (2002) discover that working time does not reduce In a one-to-one

relationship, the time spent on school-related activities. Working Students also

reduce their time spent on non-school-related activities (e.g. time spent on social

media). time spent with family or friends versus time spent watching television or

in front of a computer computer). The Zero-Sum Theory is not (or is less) valid in

this scenario.

Another theory that supports a negative association between student

work and educational success is the Primary Orientation Theory (Baert, Marx,

Neyt, Van Belle, & Van Casteren, in press; Bozick, 2007; Warren, 2002), often

cited in the field of sociology. This theory suggests that the worse academic

performance of working students is related to their primary orientation being

toward work rather than toward school. In other words, it reflects a

disengagement from school that existed before the decision to work was made,
5

rather than a negative effect due to student employment itself. Therefore, instead

of providing an explanation for a causal, negative effect of student work, this

theory reveals a potential selection problem that one wants to control for in

empirical analyses.

Spillover Theory Positive and negative spillover (Zedeck, 1992). Originally

proposed by Wilensky (1960), spillover model is based on the notion that there is

an ‘extension’ of experiences from the sphere of work to non-work in a way that

the perception of the social experience of the spheres of work and non-work for

an individual is effectively boundary-less (Parker, 1971). Theoretically, spillover

has been characterized as Positive Spillover and Negative Spillover. Positive

spillover appears in the literature under various names like extension,

generalization, familiarity, identity, isomorphism, continuation and congruence

(Staines, 1980). Positive spillover refers to the fact that positive experiences in

one domain result in fulfillment and attainment in another domain

Human Capital Theory (Becker, 1964)

Because of the added skills and knowledge gained while working,

student employment can be a valuable supplement to schooling. There are

various possible explanations for why student effort may result in such a rise in

human capital. For starters, student employment allows for the development of

new general and transferable abilities such as work values, communication skills,

and time management (Buscha, Maurel, Page, & Speckesser, 2012; Rothstein,
6

2007; Staff & Mortimer, 2007). Second, integrating study and job may provide

students with the opportunity to put what they have learned in school into

practice (Geel & Backes-Gellner, 2012; Hotz et al., 2002). Third, student

employment may promote future orientation and so drive students to study

harder in school to accomplish a specific professional objective (Oettinger, 1999;

Rothstein, 2007).

Self-Determination Theory by Deci and Ryan

SDT emphasizes the idea that qualitative differences in motivation also

matter. Specifically, a key contribution of SDT is that it describes a continuum in

which goals may be pursued for different reasons, ranging from being intrinsically

motivating at one extreme to being extrinsically motivating at the other end. The

theory suggests that these different motivations can all lead individuals to act, but

they may have different impwlications for performance and well-being. According

to SDT, intrinsically motivating tasks are interesting, enjoyable, and

spontaneously pursued by individuals. Such motivation is experienced as

autonomous and self-determined (Deci and Ryan, 2000). In contrast, extrinsically

motivated tasks are pursued because of external contingencies, but can be

experienced as controlling or autonomous depending on the extent to which the

contingencies have been internalized by the individual.

These are the theories that will support the idea of life work balance among

working student. The common problem of the working students.

7

Statement of the Problem

The study aimed to determine the relevance of balancing life and work

of the working student at Christ the King College de Maranding Inc. 2023-2024

Improving Students’ Work-Life Balance on Campus

According to the article of Emily Fournier (30 August 2022) that key of

preserving a work-life balance is controlling one's stress levels and reducing

exposure to excessive stress. This is a skill that is especially crucial during

stressful times like exam season, significant life events (like losing a loved one,

moving away from home, or going through a breakup), or current occurrences

like a pandemic or recession. Strong work-life balance has been linked to a

number of positive outcomes, such as improved academic performance,

increased creativity and innovation, a stronger will to achieve goals, increased

11

motivation and engagement, and stronger social connections. Conversely, a poor

work-life balance has been linked to symptoms of anxiety and depression

disorders, lower productivity, poor academic performance, a lower commitment

to studies and career advancement, higher rates of burnout, self-enforced social

isolation, poor physical and mental health, and even the intention to drop out of

school.

Five Reasons Being a Working Student is Seriously Great

by College Life As the College Life - Updated on November 24, 2022

stated that there are lots of different reasons why being a working student can

help you in both your university life and later career, some of them including

gaining experience and networking, as well as making some extra money and

those are first experience is key. One of the most important aspects of working

as a student is that you have the opportunity to gain experience. Second is

Network like a working student not only can you gain valuable working

experience but working part-time can present you with multiple networking

opportunities. Third is working students earned extra money. If you don’t do it for

the experience, do it for the extra money! You don’t have to start paying back

your student finance until you graduate but you could be saving some of the

money to pay back your loans if you are motivated enough. Or you might be

making money towards your rent or bills. Forth is It's all about those transferable

skills If you decide you don’t want to work as an intern, you can also find work at
12

cafés, bars, restaurants, supermarkets…you name it. With jobs like these, you

are usually able to score more flexible hours, perfect for your student schedule.

Moreover, don’t think that just because you aren’t interning or working part-time

in the industry of your choice, that your experience isn’t as valuable! On the

contrary, you’ll be able to demonstrate transferable skills like communication,

teamwork, and leadership. Lastly is Be ambitious your status as a working

student will show your future employers that you are ambitious as hell! Not

everyone has the guts or the time-management skills, to work while they study.

For further information the College Life - Updated on November 24, 2022

also stated that while there are many benefits to working while studying, student

work must be well managed. There is no obligation for you to begin working the

moment you arrive on campus as a first-year student. You're there to have fun

while studying and learning how to live independently. You should also only take

on work that you know you can handle. That is, you must be realistic about

working hours: you cannot work 30 hours as a full-time student. You must be

able to manage your work, home, social, and, most importantly, academic lives.

Balancing Work, School, and Personal Life among Graduate Students

According to Jessica M. Nicklin, Emily J. Meachon & Laurel A. McNall

2019Graduate students are faced with an array of responsibilities in their

personal and professional lives, yet little research has explored how working
13

students maintain a sense of well-being while managing work, school, and

personal-life

Balancing Between College, Work, and Personal Life

According to Penny Loretto 2022; Creating a work-life balance can be

difficult for many people, but for college students, a lack of balance can become

overwhelming if healthy living and wellness are not considered. Balancing

coursework, roommates, co-curricular activities, finances, and personal

relationships in a completely new and different environment is a huge adjustment

for students who may have come from a world where most of their basic needs

were met.

Furthermore creating a work-life balance is even more important during

times of stress. Creating a work-life balance is an ongoing process, not a one-

time fix. Be flexible, adjust your approach as needed, and prioritize your well-

being during stressful times.

Working College Students’ Time Pressure and Work-School Conflict

According to Maggie Wan Texas State University Li Feng Xiao Meng

Muxin Zhai 2021 that although working college students are experiencing

increasing demands on their time, the influence of time pressure on students’

work-school experience has been under-studied in the extant career

development literature.

Reasons Why Students Work While Studying in the Philippines December

18, 2023
There are other factors at play for working students than merely the

growing expense of education. Financial support is expected of young people in

certain households as a means of distributing responsibilities and lightening the

load. Others view it as an opportunity to prove their independence, establish their

own destiny, and feel proud of themselves. However, we can largely attribute this

to the Philippines' situation with regard to education poverty. The following are

some elements of education poverty that have an impact on a student's capacity

to pursue their education.

Financial Limitations for most families, this is the primary obstacle that

stops children from getting a good education. They don’t have the privilege to

send their kids to school, which hampers their growth. Some children even leave

school early to begin working and help their families.

Exploring the Interrelationships between School- Work- Life Balance

among College Students Vanessa Baca California State Polytechnic
University, Pomona

According to the US Census from 2011, 72% of undergraduate students are

employed. Not only do pupils Approximately one million students are engaged in

research, finishing internships, and taking part in academic pursuits to position

oneself as a competitive graduate school applicant and work (Page 15;

Carnevale, Smith, Melton, & Price). being a full-time student, Attending research

and working can have a detrimental effect on a student's academic performance.

15

In ultimately influencing the likelihood of being accepted into a graduate program

or landing a well-paying work. In a similar vein, the price of schooling has

increased dramatically over time. Private colleges have increased tuition by

179% since 1995, while public universities have not hiked tuition at all.

have increased both their in-state and out-of-state tuition by 296 percent.

(Mitchell,2015)

Insights Learned from the Related Literatures

The above mentioned literature is clearly understood by the

researchers about being a working students is difficult. It can be very challenging

situation for a working student to work and studying at the same time. College

students may face additional difficulties as a result of this, including as time

restrictions and a reduction in self-care, but these difficulties can be overcome by

learning time management techniques.

One should not hesitate to utilize their inherent support system, such as a

study partner and a source of feedback, as valuable benefits of work.

Related Studies

The following are the selected related studies:

Work–study boundary congruence: its relationship with student well-being

and engagement

As the result of the study by Moong Li Chu National University of

Singapore Elizabeth Conlon Griffith University Peter Alexander Creed Griffith

University April 2021 work–study congruence model, in which student role

congruence was related to student engagement and well-being via work–study

conflict and facilitation. We found (251 working students; 70% female; mean age

24.68 years) greater congruence to be associated with better engagement and

well-being, and conflict and facilitation to mediate partially between congruence

and well-being, explaining 37.5% of the variance in engagement and 41.1% in

well-being. Their study demonstrates how the role congruence approach can be

used to better understand the experiences of working students and suggests how

interventions can help students who are juggling multiple competing roles.

Priorities and Intentions of Working-Students Working (2022)

Working students amidst COVID-19 PandemicWorking students have many

concerns during the COVID-19 outbreak which includes their health, income, and

how to balance their education and work (Dias, 2021). Several studies reported

that working students continued working amidst the pandemic to affirm their

professional identity (Goni-Fueste et al., 2021) and for personal development

(Alcarde et al., 2022). However, several studies also reported that working

students continue working to earn extra income (Antipolo, 2021) and to support
17

their studies due to tuition hikes (Tsurugano et al., 2021). Several studies have

been conducted on the challenges and opportunities faced by working students

amidst the pandemic, yet more needs to be conducted that will focus on their

priorities and intentions.

Challenges Encountered By Working Students that Affect their Academic

Performance March 2020

This study recommended the following in terms of time management. If

you are a working student, then you should know how to manage your time. A

working student should know how to spend his or her time equally between study

and work, plan everything, and do plan strategies. In terms of priorities, there will

be a moment that working students have to choose between work and school;

working students should know what is more important to prioritize; even if you

are tired, you have to push yourself and be determined regarding the things that

you need to do. One should prioritize their goal to achieve their dreams. In terms

of the financial aspect, working students should save more for future expenses,

use their money on things that they need and not on things that they want, know

how to budget their money, practice effective strategies to save money.

Data collection methods used in this phenomenological study included

interviews, observation, and field notes. An orientation on the study was done

prior to the gathering of data which also included asking for their consent to

participate in the study. The interview which approximately lasted for forty

minutes were semi-structured to provide a framework and to get specific answers

to the research questions. Questions were open-ended to provide room for

flexibility (Kvale & Brinkmann, 2009). Within a semi-structured format, the

questions did not have to be asked exactly in this order. Probing questions and

statements followed participants’ responses when necessary for clarification and

expansion. The interviews took place either in-person or through the SMS or

messenger in the participant’s work environment. A group chat was created

among the respondents, researchers, and research aides for easy

communication.

Interview Questions: (1) What is the reason for becoming a Student

Inquiry empowers working students to share their stories and

perspectives. This can inform policymakers, educators, and support services

about the needs and challenges faced by this population, leading to more

targeted interventions and improved support systems.

Research questions define the specific aspects of life-work balance the

researcher want to investigate like the Reasons of becoming working students,

the challenges they face, their coping mechanisms, their insight, the

unforgettable experience, and their advice to the next working students.

Design of study use a lot of literature as a guide to accomplish the

study. The study take almost 4 month to finish because of the circumstances

along the way. The study only need 10 participants to collect the data needed

and transcript it. The study is a qualitative approach were in the researcher

Statistical Treatment

The following statistical tools were used to provide an acceptable

interpretation of the gathered data:

The respondents of the study are first-year to fourth-year of all

departments working students from the school year 2023-2024. The researcher

was collected and analyzed data using a survey questionnaire.

Data collection, handling

The respondents of the study are a working student of Christ the King

College de Maranding Inc. The participants are student assistant of Christ the

king College de Maranding Inc. student who works part-time to support staff,

faculty, or departments within the institution. Their duties can vary widely

depending on the specific role and needs of their supervisor, but in general, they

assist with tasks that: Reduce administrative burden, Answering phones and

emails, Filing documents and organizing records, Data entry and basic

bookkeeping, Scheduling appointments and meetings.

The researcher contacted the respondents through email, LinkedIn, and in

person, politely introducing the researcher and the research project. With clear

information about the purpose of the interview, the estimated time commitment,
28

and how their participation will benefit the research. In person, the researcher

asks them in appropriate, specific settings, asks their permission, and

approaches them politely, explaining your research and purpose.

The researcher prepared open-ended, probing questions aligned with the

objectives. Include follow-up questions to delve deeper into the responses.

Encourage elaboration and probe for deeper insights without leading the

participant. After the interview, the researcher showed genuine interest and

acknowledged their responses verbally and nonverbally. Capture key points,

emotions, and nonverbal cues. Consider recording with permission for later

transcription. Adapt your questions based on the participant's responses and

maintain a natural flow. Adapt your questions based on the participant's

responses and maintain a natural flow. Thank the participants for their time and

contribution.

The interviews go well, and the researcher gets all the data that is

needed for the study. The interviews only take 1 hour per participant. The

questions were about the reason for becoming a working student, the challenges,

the coping mechanisms, their insight about working students, their unforgettable

experiences, and advice and suggestions for the next student assistant. The data

was transcribed right after the interview being conducted. The transcription was

being used to answer the statement of the problem and to easily search for

keywords, code responses, and categorize data. The transcripts provide

29

concrete evidence to support research findings and add authenticity to the

analysis.

Chapter 4

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter presents the results and discussion were in all the data

collected are being transcribe and analyzed. It is organized to answer the

research question keeping the literature review and research findings from the

interviews in consideration.

Working Students’ Experiences Analysis of the data revealed that the

participants has difference experiences as a student assistant. According to

lyrah, According to her that she experience stress and burnout the constant

pressure to balance work and school that lead her to stress and burnout. She

feels like she never doing enough, which can take a toll on their mental and

physical health especially during exam. Sometimes she cries in the middle of the

night because of so much pressure and anxiety, but as she said, everything

happened for a reason, and she needs to be strong in order to get what she

wants to be and she’s doing this not just for herself but also to her parents.
30

According also to Rowena which is another participants, Rowena experienced

how difficult and tiring it is to be a working student because you have to wake up

early and do your daily work. She had a hard time balancing her studies and

work, and she felt that she didn’t have the right to chill because she had so much

work to do. She even experienced anxiety and depression. And she said that she

is thankful to the people around her because she was able to share her problem

and receive advice from them. She use those advices as her mechanism to cope

up all the burden and sadness she is felling. And she said that “Naa koy

pangandoy maong dili ko dapat mag kapoy kapoy” to translate it “I have dream

so I don’t have the right to feel tired”.

But despite in all of that, their shared experiences is something that

encourage them to be strong enough to survive. Those experiences stands as a

treasure that they will value for the rest of their lives for the reason that it mold

them to be who they are today and who will they become in the future.

Analysis of the data revealed that the participants had different reasons of

unforgettable experience of them being a student assistant. According to Jamie,

One of his unforgettable experience was when he woke up late due to him being

tired because of all the works and assigned task that he has to do every day and

lead him to being late one morning and was not able to join their long quiz in one

of his subjects and made him feel disappointed and embarrass of himself.
31

Because of that experience he was able to learned and practice adjustment by

waking up a little early to do everything he was told.

According also to Marcus which is our other respondent, he said that

sometimes due to full task and assigned works area there are times or moments

that she forgot to brush her teeth due to having not enough time to get ready and

that is one of her mostly embarrassing or unforgettable experience being an

student assistant.

Being a student assistant can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience,

but it also comes with its challenges. Moments of embarrass is what makes it

unforgettable and allow them to learn and grow from it. Despite the challenges,

being a student assistant can provide valuable insights and experiences that can

help students develop important skills such as time management,

communication, teamwork, and leadership. It can also offer a sense of

accomplishment and personal growth as students work to support their peers

and contribute to the academic community.

Challenges and Coping Strategies common side-effect that working

students experience is stress. Trying to balance your schoolwork with your

profession will be difficult, especially if you haven't been taking care of other

aspects of your life. Even with all the management skills you learn, the lack of

self-care can lead to a build-up of stress. Working while studying spawned some
32

barriers to realizing their dreams of finishing a degree and aspiring for a better

life. As in the case of most of the participants, they indicated that the challenges

mostly came in managing multiple task of working and studying simultaneously.

For Jimmy, he learned to prioritize tasks based on deadline and importance

stating, “I have to stay organized and focused. One coping strategy he adopted

was to listen to inspirational music which led him to think of his family and their

hardships which motivated him more to stay on course to achieve his dreams.

When balancing work, study, and personal life seems unbearable, Gemma

and Lyrah met this challenge by maintaining a positive attitude and remained

confident. Having a positive attitude boosts their motivation and combat

negativity. Aside from having a positive attitude Lyrah like Jimmy listened to

motivational songs which can be considered a form of self-care. To be a

successful student and working student simultaneously, it is essential to be

successful at self-care which may include spending time in nature, exercising, or

simply having a “me time”.

Another common problem experienced by the participants is adjusting to

other working students since the school provided them a common lodging facility.

This was especially true during their first few weeks in school. In the case of

Bella she encountered a lot of challenges, like having a hard time balancing

work, study, and personal life, and the challenging fact that she only visits her

family once a month, which was the most difficult challenge that she could say
33

she wanted to give up. In her first week of work, she was full of feelings of being

overwhelmed by the new environment, but despite all of those challenges, she

was able to overcome everything. To cope with this challenge, she made a

schedule for her work, personal life, and studies to balance her time in terms of

assignments, projects, and other school stuff and of course her work as a student

assistant.

The importance of effective time management is compounded for students

who take on the challenges of working in addition to the demands of college life.

Despite the rigorous demands of a college curriculum, working students need to

intricately balance their personal life, social relationship, and college demands

and needs, so that they can support their studies in their own pursuits while still

facilitating their academic success. Squeezing in personal time to their already

hectic schedule may seem like a nearly impossible task whilst balancing work

and college.

Guiding Philosophies majority of the participants anchored their guiding

philosophies to Watts and Pickering (2000) Theory this belief led them to skills

can be learn with the proper organize and mechanism to balance their time to

work and studies individualize instruction, not to be judgmental but aim to

develop the individual skills that helped them to perform their work and studies

meaningful. It is important to note though that the participants were guided by

other beliefs aside from Watts and Pickering’s theory. For Example, Milagros
34

believed that having organization, a proper balance, and a willingness to learn

new things in her work as a student assistant and as a third year student would

have a good impact on her ability to visualize her success.

Other working student like Bella, she has an advantage to how to balance

her time because she was a rice cake seller in morning and a balot vendor in the

evening during her senior high vacation. She also stated that learning to

multitask can seem like the only way to fit everything in. By working on

homework during work breaks or listening to lectures while commuting, they can

maximize their limited time. Bella added that as a graduating education student

the optimal strategy for multitasking ultimately depends on the particular student,

their workload, and the nature of the tasks at hand. They may sustain academic

and professional success and efficiently manage your time by trying different

things and seeing what works best for you.

Like Jamie he believes the Human Capital Theory (Becker, 1964) Time

management, Juan often has to juggle several assignments at once, which can

be overwhelming at times. However, he learned to prioritize tasks based on

deadlines and importance, which helps him stay, organized and focused. By the

organized and time management Jamie can able to do his duty as a student

assistant and a student at the same time.

35

Myrna believes the theory of Budget theory of Henry Adams, William F.

Willoughby, V. O. Key, Jr., and, more recently, Aaron Wildavsky. Since Myrna

doesn’t get financial support from her parents and she only has the 500 pesos a

month given by the school where she is working as a student assistant, she

budgets it well for one month. In addition, since she knows that $500 is not

enough to support all her needs from paying for other necessities like projects

and other payments to her department since they are not covered by the school,

she will do laundry for the teacher’s clothes to earn extra money.

Aside from time managing Rowena believes the theory of Doyle, M. E.

and Smith, M. K. (2002). ‘Friendship: theory and experience’ The encyclopedia of

pedagogy and informal education. Rowena is lucky to be surrounded by amazing

people that she can tell are true friends of her. Despite the stress, problems from

work, struggles in school, and anxiety, she has a friend that she can ask for help

from, express her emotions to, and receive advice and help from.

As Gemma Belief “Kapoy ang mag working pero mas kapoy ang mag tambay” to

translate it “"Working is tiring, but being idle is even more tiring." Just keep going

and move forward. Maya said that , “kapoy pero kung naay pangandoy, laban

lang”. Translated in English means, “It is tiresome but if you have dreams in life,

there is no other way but to go forward”. Myrna also belief that “If you have

aspirations in life, you have to persevere.” Life is not that easy that you can get

what you want, you have to work hard to gain it. And as Rowena said “Naa koy
36

pangandoy maong dili ko dapat mag kapoy kapoy” to translate it “I have dream

so I don’t have the right to feel tired”.

Insights

Analysis of the data revealed that the participants had similar reasons of

insights of being a working students. When the respondents ask about their

insights they declared that "A working student's life is not easy. It might be

exhausting at times because there are a lot of things to do in addition to one's

academic obligations. But they also stated that if you are “You must endure if you

have goals in life.” We all agree of that statement, which is in order to reach our

goals in life we must endure the challenges and problems. Due to poverty they

are force to be a student assistant and one of our respondents said about his

insights that He being a student assistant is a rewarding and challenging

experience. It requires a high level of responsibility, organization, and

professionalism. However, it also provides opportunities for personal and

professional growth, as well as the satisfaction of striving hard to achieve his

goals and dreams in life.

37

According to insights of all the participants, the best weapon in being a

student assistant is knowing how to value and manage time. According to them,

Time management transcends being a mere skill; it becomes the cornerstone of

their lifestyle. It's about crafting a schedule that not only accommodates

assignments and exams but also fits in the doing their designated work area. The

clock becomes a constant companion, ticking away with a reminder that every

moment holds significance.

As I sit and listened about their insight on being a student assistant I

realized how difficult and depressing it is to be one. However, the life of a

working student is not without its challenges. The pressure to excel academically

and professionally, coupled with the works in their assigned area, can be

overwhelming. Yet, it is precisely these challenges that become stepping stones

to personal and professional growth. The resilience cultivated in facing these

obstacles is a valuable asset that will undoubtedly serve them well in the future.

Each setback becomes an opportunity for reflection and refinement, contributing

to the ongoing process of becoming a more adaptable and resilient individual.

Reasons and Benefits for Working. Analysis of the data revealed that

the participants had similar reasons for becoming working students. Almost all of

them considered working while studying for financial reasons. Poverty was a

common denominator among them and the only option for them to finish college

was to become a working student as parents cannot afford to send them to

38

college. In the case of Bella, she was the fourth child among five siblings. When

she graduated from senior high school, her parents told her that they can no

longer support her college education due to financial problems. Her parents are

farmer laborers, and her mother is a plain housewife, which means they have a

problem in terms of money to support her transportation, project, tuition,

allowance, food, and other school fees. For Jimmy, being a working student also

provided him the opportunity to be responsible aside from its financial

contribution. Working and associating with other people in the workplace taught

him the proper way of communication and collaboration, taught him

responsibility, provided him professional growth and the satisfaction of striving

hard.

For the participants, becoming working students is the only pathway to

cover their schooling and living expenses and ultimately realize their dreams and

aspirations in life. Based on their responses, it is confirmed that financial

support, self-development and intrinsic motivation to realize their dreams are

among the driving forces of working while studying in college. From their

responses, it can be inferred that the participant seemed to fully understand the

motivation and reasons behind working while studying.

Being a working student is truly hard and it comes with great responsibility.

This gives them a sense of being responsible for their actions and choices.

Students also get a lot of experiences and ideas while working which can help
39

them improve their personal life and enrich their problem-solving skills as in the

case of Jimmy. Working alongside studying also helps the students to know the

positive and negative impact of working while studying, how to surpass the

challenges and problems they encounter and realize how hard it is to earn

money. Commitment, discipline, and time management are essential when

working while studying.

Advice to Prospective working students analysis of the data revealed

that the participants had similar advices to all prospective working students.

Based on Milagros interview, her advices is that as a student assistant you will

encounter various challenges and struggles and in order to overcome all of that

you have to be Resilience and withstand or recover quickly to all the emotional

break downs you might experience along the way, second is knowing how to

manage time properly, being able to know time management can save you more

in your work and studies, knowing how to value time is one way to be closer to

your goals. Lastly is Practice self-care, Balancing the demands of being a

student assistant with your academic and personal commitments can be

overwhelming at times. Make sure to prioritize self-care by setting boundaries,

taking breaks when needed.

According also to Jamie he said that Being a student assistant is a

learning experience, so don't be too hard on yourself if you make mistakes or

encounter challenges along the way. Instead, view these experiences as

40

opportunities to learn and grow in your role. Don't be afraid to reach out to your

supervisor or colleagues for support when you need it. Building a support

network can help you navigate the emotional ups and downs of being a student

assistant and provide a sense of community within your department or program.

The entire respondents are grateful to have the opportunity to be a student

assistant because they were given a chance to finish their study. They are happy

but at the same time sad because of being away from their family and their love

ones.

They always remember that your role as a student assistant has the

potential to make a positive impact on your peers, your department, and your

community. Keeping this in mind can help you stay motivated and focused on the

bigger picture, even during challenging times.

CHAPTER 5

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter is divided into three parts. The first portion is contributed to a

general overview of the investigation, which is followed by a summary,

conclusions, and recommendations of the study.

Summary

Finding out how important it is for working students at Christ the King

College de Maranding Inc. to balance their lives and careers was the study's goal

in 2023–2024. More precisely, the study aimed to determine the importance of

maintaining a balance between job and personal life, as well as how working

students would manage their time between employment and school. Its specific
45

goals were to ascertain the following: (1) What are the participants' experiences

in achieving work-life balance? (2) What are the participants' guiding principles

for achieving work-life balance? (3) What is the takeaway on working and

studying? (4) How does working while studying benefit the participants?

(5)What are the reasons of the respondents for working through college?

The study has a (31) respondent and only (10) is the representative. The

study used qualitative approach to answer its research problems. Qualitative use

to define what are the tools and ways to manage and to handle their time for

work, studies, and personal life.

Unforgettable Experience.

As the respondent answer about their unforgettable experience and

since they are all Student assistant of a Catholic school all their answer are the

same and that is having GSK every Tuesday at exactly six (6) PM, to be led by

Brother Jestoney Ganzan.

Challenges Time Management finding enough time to balance work,

studies, and personal life is extremely demanding. Working students struggle to

find enough time for all their commitments, leading to sleep deprivation, stress,

and burnout. Scheduling conflicts work schedules clash with class schedules or

study group meetings, forcing students to make difficult choices. They were

having a hard time to choose what should come first is it work or studies. Stress
46

and anxiety the pressure of deadlines, exams, and work performance trigger the

stress and anxiety, affecting overall well-being.

Coping Mechanism

The respondent stated that they consider themselves fortunate to have

people with whom they can discuss their issues and ask for assistance.

Balancing time between work and Studies the respondent also stated that having

a time management and organized schedule book reduce stress and improve

productivity.

Insights

When the respondents ask about their insights they declared that "A

working student's life is not easy. It might be exhausting at times because there

are a lot of things to do in addition to one's academic obligations. But they also

stated that if you are “You must endure if you have goals in life.”

Reason

Financial reasons hold the most weight for a significant portion of

students. This Study has shown that covering educational expenses and living

costs is a primary driver for student employment. The rising cost of education

and living expenses makes work almost necessary for many students to
47

financially navigate their academic journey. This can involve covering tuition fees,

rent, food, and other necessities, either partially or fully.

Advice and Suggestion to the aspirant Student Assistant, As the

respondent being ask about giving an advice to the aspirant Student Assistant

they said that being a working student is not easy, but if you have the

perseverance and eagerness to finish your study you have to be resilient and

hardworking. You must do your assign task with the sense of willingness.

Conclusions

In conclusion, learning how to properly balance work and study time will

help you avoid stress and burnout while also gaining valuable work experience. It

also enables students to gain experience and relevant skills in their chosen fields

while still in school, which increases their employability. Additionally, juggling

work and school allows students to get significant work experience and relevant

abilities that will help them stand out in the job market. Professional growth is

another benefit of this strategy. Also, in the kids' individual will. Improved

emotional resilience can be attained by studying stress management techniques

and how to overcome obstacles with preparation and organization. Resilience

and coping abilities are beneficial in many facets of life.

48

In general, a working student can have a more successful and satisfying

experience in their personal, professional, and academic lives when they have a

good method of managing their time. Their capacity for efficient task

management and prioritization gives those invaluable experiences and skills that

get them ready for opportunities and challenges down the road. The student

assistant wants to finish their education and fulfill their dream despite their lack of

resources. It’s nice to know that there are still student pursuing their dreams

despite of the circumstance and problem in life.

Recommendations

In this study, the researchers will recommend the following:

From the results of this study, school administrators are challenged to

support Student Assistant in collaborate with faculty to ensure reasonable

workloads and explore alternative assignments or extensions if needed.

Encourage professors to clearly communicate deadlines, expectations, and

course requirements early on since the student is working on the institution as a

Student Assistant (SA).

The results of this study would convince educators to take into account

unique circumstances and provide fair extensions when necessary, all the while

maintaining academic requirements for pupils who are working. Encourage a

culture of understanding and community in your classroom so that kids may

confide in one another and share their struggles. Promote conversations about
49

efficiently juggling work and school while emphasizing the value of wellbeing and

self-care.

Students

In order to create a conducive learning environment for working

students, it is imperative that the study's findings be shared with other students.

Begin by establishing settings that are nice and hospitable to working students.

Make them feel appreciated and included in group activities. Normalize

difficulties: Have frank conversations about the obstacles faced by working

students and establish a secure space where they may express themselves

without fear of repercussions. Be a good listener and provide words of

encouragement. Show genuine concern and validate their struggles by actively

listening to them.

The results of this study can be replicated and expanded upon by

future researchers using alternative approaches or settings, strengthening

current understanding and revealing new subtleties. By expanding the application

of successful discoveries to other contexts, you can uncover uncharted territory,

address open-ended concerns in your field, and provide the groundwork for

future research. The work can serve as a reference for a later researcher.
