The Science of Memory
The Science of Memory
Brain is one of the most complex organ in our body. It is a part of our nervous system. It is made up of
more than 100 billion nerves protected by skull. The brain can be divided into 4 lobes: Temporal, Parietal,
Occipital and Frontal. The brain makes up around 2% of a human entire weight. The brain plays a central
role in the central of most body functions including awareness, movements, sensation, thoughts, speech
& memory, voluntary actions.

It receives sense than conduct it all over the body to response. It helps us to understand the circumstances
around our environment. Then it stores those experience in our subconscious mind. which we called
memory. Now the question is where the memory is actually located or stored in our nervous system and
how we reuse it and what is the contribution of our stored memory in our daily life.
I select this topic by observing the attitude one of my little cousin. he is about 3 years old. Firstly you have
to know how our memory is controlled in our brain and how it process in our brain. Our brain is divided
into four lobes and memories are not stored just in one part. It depends on the type of memory. For
example, Explicit Memories — which are about events that happened, as well as general facts and
information rely on the Hippocampus, the Neo cortex and the Amygdala. Implicit Memories, such as motor
memories, rely on the Basal Ganglia and Cerebellum. Short-term Working Memory relies most heavily on
the Prefrontal Cortex. In case of children they are explicit and implicit memories do not contribute to store
their memory which is related to their age. According to increasing their age this two types of memory
gradually start to work. For children, working memory may contribute to help their memory build up.
We may define working memory as, Working memory is a system for temporarily storing and managing
the information required to carry out complex cognitive tasks such as learning, reasoning, and
comprehension. Working memory is involved in the selection, initiation, and termination of
information-processing functions such as encoding, storing, and retrieving data.

Working memory is processed in central executive part of the prefrontal cortex at the front of the brain.
In below, the figure indicates the prefrontal cortex.

Now come to my cousin. Since two day I have been keeping eye on him. I have noticed that, he can
control several feature on my phone. Then I have thought, I can conduct an experiment upon him. Then I
show him an android game named Temple Run downloaded from Google Play Store. I have instructed
him how to play this game, then I give him my cell phone to play. I have observed he could not able to
gain so many score first 5 to 6 time. But after a certain period he has proceeded forward to earn score.
After playing this game long 3 days I have seen an excellent result. He almost performed this game like
an adult person. Then I have done another task. I take my phone from him for 10 days. Then again I gave
him the game to play. Then I have noticed he almost forgot many strategy of this game.
From this personal or home made experiment I can say that, her gaming memory is stored in prefrontal
region as working memory. Which is temporary memory as my thought. I also think it may loss because
of irregular practice. On the other hand this temporary memory may transfer into permanent memory
by regular base performance.
