Background
IDEO is a renowned product development firm based in Silicon Valley, known for its
success in designing innovative products.
Handspring aims to release a slightly smaller and less expensive palm-size computer
compatible with 3Com’s operating software.
IDEO’s approach to innovation emphasizes "failing often to succeed sooner," generating
numerous innovative ideas before finalizing a product through discipline and fast
decision-making.
IDEO's philosophy blends Californian iconoclasm with genuine respect for new ideas
and inventions, contributing to the design of thousands of products over two decades.
IDEO gained national prominence when ABC’s Nightline showcased its innovation
process by redesigning the supermarket shopping cart in just five days.
Boyle faces a dilemma of whether to suggest extending the development schedule for
the Visor, fearing that an overly aggressive timeline might compromise the quality of
the final product.

on ideas, technologies, and market perceptions using direct products

PHASE II : Evaluating/Refining
The team made several test mainly on human factors and ergonomics to
develop functional prototypes and resolve technical problem

PHASE III : Implement (Detailed Engineering)
The team completed product design and verified taht the product
worked. The team also provides clients with model design , tooling

IDEO’s
Organization
IDEO
Culture
IDEO’s culture is all about innovation, creativity,
and teamwork. They believe in rapid prototyping to
communicate ideas effectively. Their offices have
workshops for creating both simple and complex
prototypes. They follow the “Rough, Rapid, and
Right” approach to prototyping. They value failure
as a part of their culture and see it as an opportunity
for learning. They aim to generate many ideas early
in the design process through regular brainstorming
sessions. Their process encourages creativity and
collaboration among team members.
IDEO
Management
IDEO's management style is
decentralized, and decision-making is
distributed throughout the organization.
IDEO did not mandate a dress code at the
workplace and encouraged people to
leave their desks and walk around to
avoid mental blocks.
IDEO rarely fires employees.
Management mainly recruited young
people from their internship program

Conclusion
We suggest that IDEO do negotiation first with Handsring,
if they can reach an agreement on an acceptable period of
completion. If it is not possible, IDEO should decline to
maintain its design and philosophy.
Because the philosophy is the core value of the company
which is differentiate with others and the source of clients’
